The case into Ms Cotter’s death was reopened in 2012 when DNA was taken from the victim’s body and compared to a prime suspect who had already been ruled out. However, the trail went cold for another seven years, until 2019, when Apelgren came to the attention of police for attacking his third wife. Authorities later matched Apelgren’s DNA to the DNA in Ms Cotter’s death.
