In a recent TikTok post, 64-year-old American expert Dan Buettner claimed that coffee is a longevity drink - especially if you drink it before noon.
American expert Dan Buettner, 64, has spent his career exploring the lands of longevity - where people are much more likely to live to 100 than Americans.
According to this expert, the habit of drinking coffee is not only associated with improved mood and cognitive function but also has the potential to reduce the risk of heart disease.
"I think one of the longevity drinks is coffee, but the most important secret to drinking coffee to live longer is to use it before noon. If you drink 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning, it will reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease," said Buettner.
"Meanwhile, if you drink coffee in the afternoon or evening, it doesn't seem to have that effect. Also, if you drink coffee too late in the day, it can disrupt your sleep. Poor sleep is associated with a shorter lifespan," the expert said.
That view comes from a new study in the European Heart Journal, which analyzed more than 40,000 adults to see the effects of drinking coffee at different times of the day. About 36% of participants drank coffee in the morning, 16% drank it throughout the day, and 48% did not drink coffee.
Results showed that people who drank coffee in the morning had a 31% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 16% lower risk of death from any cause. This effect was not seen in people who drank coffee all day and did not drink coffee.
Dr. Lu Qi, lead author of the study at Tulane University (USA), said: "This is a study to evaluate the health impact of drinking coffee at different times. Our findings show that not only how much you drink but also the timing is very important."
“We don’t usually give advice on timing in dietary guidelines, but perhaps we should consider this in the future… This analysis doesn’t tell us why drinking coffee in the morning reduces the risk of cardiovascular death,” the doctor explained.
A possible explanation is that drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening may disrupt circadian rhythms and hormone levels like melatonin, which in turn leads to changes in cardiovascular risk factors like inflammation and blood pressure.
However, Dr. Lu Qi said that further studies are needed to validate the findings in other population groups.
Buettner also recommends staying away from typical “Western” breakfasts, like bacon and nuts. Instead, he recommends trying minestrone, a thick Italian soup.
In another TikTok clip, Buettner explains: “What should you eat if you want to live to 100? Take a cue from the world’s longest-lived men, who eat minestrone every day. That’s three beans and barley — a whole-food protein plus about 20 types of fiber that your gut microbiome will love. Of course, finish your breakfast with some good black coffee. The biggest source of antioxidants in the American diet is coffee.”
