In a recent TikTok post, 64-year-old American expert Dan Buettner claimed that coffee is the drink of longevity – especially if you drink it before noon.
American expert Dan Buettner, 64, has dedicated his career to exploring longevity zones – places where people are far more likely to live to 100 than Americans.
According to this expert, the habit of drinking coffee is not only associated with improved mood and cognitive function but also has the potential to reduce the risk of heart disease.
"I think one of the longevity drinks is coffee, but the most important secret to drinking coffee for a longer life is to consume it before noon. If you drink one or two cups of coffee in the morning, it will reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease," Buettner said.
"Meanwhile, drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening doesn't seem to have that effect. Additionally, drinking coffee too late in the day can disrupt sleep. Poor sleep translates to a shorter lifespan," the expert said.
This view stems from a new study in the European Heart Journal, which analyzed over 40,000 adults to understand the impact of drinking coffee at different times of the day. Approximately 36% of participants drank coffee in the morning, 16% drank it throughout the day, and 48% did not drink coffee.
The results showed that people who drank coffee in the morning had a 31% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a 16% lower risk of dying from any cause. This effect was not observed in people who drank coffee throughout the day or who did not drink coffee at all.
Dr. Lu Qi, lead author of the study at Tulane University (USA), said: "This study assessed the health effects of drinking coffee at different times. Our findings indicate that it's not just how much you drink, but also when you drink it that matters."
"We don't usually give advice on timing in dietary guidelines, but perhaps we should consider this in the future... This analysis doesn't tell us why drinking coffee in the morning reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease," the doctor explained.
A possible explanation is that drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening may disrupt circadian rhythms and hormone levels such as melatonin. This, in turn, can lead to changes in cardiovascular risk factors such as inflammation and blood pressure.
However, Dr. Lu Qi believes that further research is needed to validate these findings in other population groups.
Additionally, expert Buettner advises avoiding typical "Western" breakfasts, such as bacon and nuts. Instead, he recommends trying minestrone – a rich Italian soup.
In another TikTok clip, expert Buettner explains: "What should you eat if you want to live to 100? Follow the example of the world's longest-living men; they eat minestrone every day. This is three types of beans and barley – a whole protein source plus about 20 types of fiber that your gut microbiome will love. Of course, finish your breakfast with some good black coffee. The biggest source of antioxidants in the American diet is coffee."
