Farmer Thach Thi Xuan, Nhue Tu B hamlet, Ham Giang commune shared: her family has 0.3 hectares of specialized land; every year they usually grow cucumbers, yardlong beans and bitter melon.

In the winter-spring crop of 2022-2023, the family will grow pumpkins and the company will purchase them at a guaranteed price of 5,000 VND/kg or more; if the market goes up, the purchase price will increase. In 2 consecutive crops, the price of pumpkins has increased (over 7,000 VND/kg), making pumpkin growers very excited.

In the winter-spring pumpkin crop of 2023 - 2024, farmers in Ham Giang commune planted 46.5 hectares, with nearly 80 households in 02 hamlets Nhue Tu A and Nhue Tu B participating in cooperation with enterprises.

According to comrade Tran Thanh Can, Agricultural Officer of Ham Giang commune, Tra Cu district: regarding the conditions for growing crops, including pumpkin, the land in Ham Giang is very suitable for the winter-spring crop, also known as the dry season crop.

In the future, the expansion of pumpkin growing areas requires the participation of businesses and farmers in product consumption; to ensure peace of mind for pumpkin growers when developing large areas.

According to records from pumpkin growers in Ham Giang, with pumpkin prices fluctuating between 6,000 - 6,500 VND, pumpkin growers make a profit.

Pumpkin growers said: in addition to income from selling pumpkins; growers also earn income from selling pumpkin flowers, on average 1,000m2 of pumpkin cultivation yields 130-150kg of cotton/crop; pumpkins sell for 10,000-12,000 VND/kg of cotton and pumpkin growers hire workers to pick them for 5,000 VND/kg.

Farmer Son Ngoc Thai, Nhue Tu A hamlet, Ham Giang commune, Tra Cu district (Tra Vinh province) said: This is the second crop his family has grown pumpkin on an area of ​​0.2 hectares.

As a result, in the second crop, his family harvested 4 tons of pumpkin at 8,000 VND/kg and 350 kg of pumpkin flowers at 10,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Thai has a total income of over 35 million VND from the pumpkin growing model, of which the cost is about 20 million VND. Growing pumpkins for flowers and young fruits brings a very high income and is suitable for areas converted from rice.

Mr. Ly Thanh Dan, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Ham Giang Agricultural Cooperative (Ham Giang Commune, Tra Cu District, Tra Vinh Province) said: In the winter-spring crop of 2023 - 2024, his family has cooperated with farmers to plant 3 hectares and purchase at market prices; the average yield is 15 - 17 tons of fruit/ha.

Pumpkin prices range from 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg, pumpkin growers in Ham Giang commune, Tra Cu district (Tra Vinh province) have an income of 70 - 80 million VND/ha/crop.
