Doctors at Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital perform a kidney transplant.

The transplant pair are siblings. The kidney recipient is a 35-year-old male patient with end-stage renal failure who has been on dialysis for many years.

To prepare for this second transplant, the hospital has carefully prepared facilities and equipment, fully implemented consultation procedures, provided guidance to patients and their families, and organized many internal professional consultations as well as with leading experts.

Unlike kidney transplantation from a brain-dead donor, kidney transplantation from a living donor has its own advantages and difficulties, requiring very careful preparation to ensure the best recovery for both the donor and the recipient.

On April 15, with the participation of 30 doctors from Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, and the support of doctors from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, the first kidney transplant from a living donor in Quang Ninh was performed.

After 3 hours of implementation with the phases: kidney extraction - kidney washing - kidney transplantation, the kidney transplant was completed with positive results. In particular, the kidney extraction was performed using modern endoscopic methods, to help the kidney donor reduce pain, reduce blood loss and recover quickly. Kidney transplant patients will continue to be closely monitored in the intensive care unit 24/7.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Nhu Trung, Department of Nephrology - Urology, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital said that kidney transplantation from living donors, blood relatives often have good immune compatibility, kidney function is also better. However, kidney harvesting - kidney transplantation on living people also requires careful preparation and better coordination between teams, closely monitoring both kidney donor and kidney transplant patients.

After a successful surgery, as of this afternoon, April 15, the kidney transplant patient has stable survival rates, with positive signs that the kidney is excreting urine.

Dr. Tran Anh Cuong, Director of Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, also said: In the coming time, the hospital will make kidney transplantation a routine technique, which is the foundation for implementing other organ transplantation techniques. In addition, the unit will also strive to continue to approach more advanced techniques, expand the scope of performing specialized techniques, and meet the treatment needs of people in the province as well as in the region.

This is the third kidney transplant surgery performed in Quang Ninh within just the past week.

The continuous implementation of kidney transplants in a short period of time affirms the determination of the Quang Ninh Health sector in mastering this technique, opening up new opportunities for life for kidney failure patients in the province as well as in the region. At the same time, it is also a premise for implementing more advanced techniques in the future.
