The program aims to promptly detect children with problems of slow growth in height, especially due to growth hormone (GH) deficiency. At the same time, the program also provides knowledge and guidance for parents on how to care for and monitor their children's growth to ensure their comprehensive and healthy development.
The program for screening for slow growth in children is also part of the goal of helping improve children's height - part of the joint effort "Improving Vietnamese stature" of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital.
Doctor Vo Duc Chien, Director of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, spoke at the launching ceremony of the program for screening children for slow growth in height.
At the ceremony, Dr. Vo Duc Chien, Director of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, said: "After 8 consecutive years of implementing the program to screen for slow growth in children, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital has received thousands of cases for examination, not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also in many other provinces and cities, showing the interest of parents in the development of their children's height as well as the spread of the program."
According to Dr. Vo Duc Chien, screening helps detect children with growth retardation due to growth hormone deficiency - a rare disease that is difficult to detect but is a common cause of stunted growth in children. Thanks to that, children can be treated promptly and improve their height effectively before it is too late.
In Vietnam, it is a fact that children are often only discovered by their parents to have stunted growth when they reach school age, that is, when they have the opportunity to compare their height with their peers. Sometimes, a child's stunted growth can also be discovered by chance when the child is examined for another medical condition.
Doctor Tran Thi Ngoc Anh, Department of Endocrinology, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, shares with parents about the problem of slow height growth in children.
Doctor Tran Thi Ngoc Anh, Department of Endocrinology, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, generally recommends that parents should closely monitor their child's height. If they see that the growth rate is less than 4 cm/year, they should take the child to see a doctor immediately.
If the child's height curve is horizontal or downward and malnutrition has been ruled out, then it is likely that the child is experiencing slow growth due to growth hormone deficiency.
The outlook for children with growth hormone deficiency depends largely on when treatment is started. If the growth retardation is diagnosed and treated early, the child can reach a near-normal height or even develop normally like other children of the same age.
