Immediately, doctors from the emergency department of Can Tho Children's Hospital examined the patient and found that he had a red rash scattered on his chest and a bite mark suspected to be from a scorpion on his lower leg.
The bite site was swollen and bleeding. The patient was diagnosed with anaphylactic shock due to a scorpion bite and received emergency anti-shock treatment.
According to the family, while walking along the riverbank near the house to catch snails, D. accidentally stepped on a scorpion without knowing it.
Immediately afterwards, the baby was bitten by a scorpion on the lower left leg. The baby was taken to a nearby medical facility for first aid and transferred to Can Tho Children's Hospital. At the emergency department, the doctors who received the baby immediately treated him for shock and provided respiratory support.
After 30 minutes of intensive resuscitation, the patient began to regain consciousness, blood pressure stabilized and breathing difficulties decreased. Doctors continued to treat anaphylactic shock while combining intravenous antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, pain relievers, antihistamines, and tetanus antitoxin injections.
Currently, when vital signs are stable, the patient has been transferred to the cardiology department for monitoring and further treatment of inflammation and swelling caused by the scorpion bite.
According to Dr. Duong Thi Huyen Trang, emergency department of Can Tho Children's Hospital, this is a rare case of anaphylactic shock due to a scorpion sting in the Mekong Delta.
According to medical literature, scorpions are quite shy and usually stay away from humans. So the cases of being stung are due to being threatened or accidentally stepped on.
Most scorpions in Vietnam are not highly toxic, so their stings usually only cause swelling, heat, redness, and pain. Rarely, severe shock as above occurs.
Through this case, doctors warn that when children are bitten by scorpions or venomous insects, after first aid and disinfecting the bite, they should take the patient to the hospital for examination and timely emergency treatment to avoid dangerous complications.
