“The child is too young to learn”, “Newborns just need to eat and sleep” are the statements that Ms. Cam Ly often hears from people around her. However, she still believes in brain science methods and is also someone who has been exposed to early education since childhood, so Ms. Ly and her husband still decided to teach Leo while she was pregnant.

Unlike other mothers, Ms. Ly applies the OKR method to help her child achieve measurable growth milestones as quickly as possible.

OKR (Objective Key Results) is a management method commonly used in businesses to help individuals and organizations define goals, measure and track results. The method includes: Objectives are precise, clear, concise goals and Key Results are measurable, time-bound, challenging indicators to evaluate whether the goal has been achieved or not.

Applying OKR to the parenting process

“It sounds strange, but in fact, raising children is similar to human resource management. I will set goals for my child, key results and implement them through actions," said the female parent. All you need is a board, an excel file, or a notepad to make a complete plan for your child in each stage.

Right from Leo's birth, Ly set goals: 3 months for him to roll over; 4 months for him to crawl; 5 months for him to sit up; 9 months for him to talk... and from these goals, there are key results and specific actions to follow.

For example, to help Leo reach the 3-month milestone of rolling over, Ms. Ly outlined the key results: the child has the behavior of lying on his side; stiff neck; weight within the standard, not overweight. To achieve these results, specific actions and exercises are needed, such as practicing lying on his stomach 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes each time; regularly leaning over when sleeping; playing attention-grabbing games to make the child lean over 3 times a day. At the same time, check the weight daily, ensuring the standard of maximum gain of 1kg/month in the first 3 months; regularly let the child practice rolling the ball to increase psychomotor ability.

Leo achieved remarkable growth milestones, could roll over at 2 months, could point to the correct card at 3 months, crawled without support at 4 months, walked proficiently with support at 8 months, and especially at 9 months he could say many meaningful single words.

“Children are geniuses. Their brains are at the bottom of the triangle, meaning the younger they are, the better their ability to absorb knowledge is. On the contrary, the older they are, the more their ability to absorb knowledge decreases,” said Ms. Ly. This is the golden stage of a child’s brain that no parent should miss.

After applying, the OKR method is clearly effective, achieving the best growth milestones in the shortest time, both physically and linguistically and cognitively.

At home, Leo's dad will be in charge of motor goals, while mom will be in charge of cognitive goals. At the same time, both parents will work together on language goals for the baby.

Regarding concentration, Leo is assessed by teachers to have outstanding concentration ability, he can attentively read 5-6 books with his parents at the same time. "Concentration is a necessary ability for children to be able to study well in the future," Leo's father proudly said.

Want your child to develop according to their strengths and passions

Ly and her husband have a good academic background, having graduated from top universities in and outside the country. However, the family does not force their child to study or expect him to pursue academic achievements. On the contrary, they hope Leo will develop according to his strengths and passions.

If Leo loves academics and can handle pressure, the family will definitely try to send him to a top academic environment. If he loves art, that's even better. The family always emphasizes good study and active extracurricular activities.

"Leo is a unique, active, and smiling baby, so I told my husband that we must first develop leadership skills in him. I hope he has this quality so that it will be less difficult to train him," Ly laughed.

Leo will soon be 10 months old and Ly and her husband have decided to send him to a full-day early education preschool near their home. Leo will attend the preschool from Monday to Friday and attend extra classes at an early education institute on Saturday and Sunday.

On weekday evenings, Ly and her husband still tutor their child to achieve new goals as set by OKR. Despite their busy schedule, Ly and her husband believe that "learning" here is like playing to stimulate their child's interest, as well as not putting too much pressure but still respecting their child's natural development needs. If the child doesn't like it, the parents will definitely not force it.
