On August 25, information from An Giang Provincial General Hospital (An Giang province) said that the unit had just successfully removed a foreign object, a small battery, from the stomach of a 7-year-old boy.
Accordingly, at around 12 noon on August 24, NVT (7 years old, residing in Da Phuoc town, An Phu district, An Giang province) swallowed a small AA battery into his stomach. About 4 hours later, the family took T. to An Giang Regional General Hospital. Here, the medical team quickly consulted, took X-rays, and determined that T. had a AA battery (the type of battery used in watches) in his stomach.
Determining that the battery is acidic and that staying in the stomach for a long time will cause a perforation of the digestive tract, the team of doctors quickly anesthetized the child to remove the foreign object. Because the child had just finished eating, the food mixed with the battery, so removing the foreign object was difficult. After more than an hour, the doctors successfully removed the battery from the child's stomach. The child's health is currently stable and he can be discharged soon.
According to Dr. Vo Duong Trieu - Department of Endoscopy, foreign objects in the digestive tract need to be handled properly and promptly, especially watch batteries, which can cause serious complications. In addition, if handled late (after 6-8 hours), the foreign object will be pushed into the small intestine, making endoscopy impossible.
