On December 21, specialist doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital (HCMC), said that through medical history, it was noted that baby V. had been sick for 2 days, with a mild fever, fatigue, vomiting, sweating, and cold hands and feet. The child was taken to Vinh Long General Hospital for diagnosis of cardiogenic shock - myocarditis, treated with endotracheal intubation, vasopressors, and transferred to the City Children's Hospital.
At the City Children's Hospital, V. was lethargic, lips were pale, extremities were cool, radial pulse was weak and difficult to detect, heart rate fluctuated 180-220 times/minute, lungs were not cracked, lung sounds were even on both sides, abdomen was soft, liver was 2 cm under right rib, neck was soft, no rash on hands and feet, no signs of skin and mucous membrane bleeding. Echocardiography showed reduced ejection fraction EF to 22-25% (normal EF 60-80%).
Baby V. received intensive treatment with ECMO for 8 days.
The child was diagnosed with acute myocarditis and cardiogenic shock on the second day. Doctors treated him with a ventilator, consulted with the cardiovascular team, cardiothoracic surgery team, and intensive care team to perform ECMO intervention for the child...
As a result, after 8 days of ECMO, the child's hemodynamic status was stable, heart rate returned to sinus rhythm, the child was weaned off ECMO, then weaned off the ventilator and transferred to the Cardiology department for further treatment.
Dr. Tien noted that at the end of the year, cold weather can cause cases of viral infections with complications of myocarditis in older children. Therefore, when children show signs of mild fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, pale complexion, pale limbs, fainting, chest pain, quickly take the child to a medical facility with a pediatric specialist for early examination and appropriate treatment.
