On December 21, specialist doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital (HCMC), said that through medical history, it was noted that baby V. had been sick for 2 days, with a low fever, fatigue, vomiting, sweating, and cold hands and feet. The child was taken to Vinh Long General Hospital for diagnosis of cardiogenic shock - myocarditis, treated with endotracheal intubation, vasopressors, and transferred to the City Children's Hospital.
At the City Children's Hospital, V. was lethargic, had pale lips, cool extremities, weak and difficult to detect radial pulse, rapid heart rate ranging from 180-220 beats/minute, no rales in the lungs, even lung sounds on both sides, soft abdomen, liver 2 cm under the right rib cage, soft neck, no rash on hands and feet, no signs of skin and mucous membrane bleeding. Echocardiography reduced the ejection fraction EF to 22-25% (normal EF 60-80%).
The child was diagnosed with acute myocarditis and cardiogenic shock on the second day. Doctors treated him with a ventilator, consulted with the cardiovascular team, cardiothoracic surgery, and intensive care to perform ECMO intervention for the child...
As a result, after 8 days of ECMO, the child's hemodynamics were stable, the heart rate returned to sinus rhythm, the child was weaned off ECMO, then weaned off the ventilator and transferred to the Cardiology department for further treatment.
Dr. Tien noted that at the end of the year, cold weather can cause cases of viral infections with complications of myocarditis in older children. Therefore, when you see your child showing signs of mild fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, pale complexion, pale limbs, fainting, or chest pain, quickly take your child to a medical facility with a pediatric specialist for early examination and appropriate treatment.
