GĐXH - A previously healthy child with meningitis suddenly developed a headache, accompanied by vomiting and fever...
6 year old child with meningitis caused by enterovirus
Recently, doctors at Hung Vuong General Hospital, Phu Tho said they had received and treated many children hospitalized with meningitis , mainly caused by enterovirus (or EV for short).
The most recent case was a girl (6 years old, in Tuyen Quang), with a history of good health, about 2 days before being admitted to the hospital, the child had intermittent headaches, accompanied by vomiting and fever. The family took the child to a medical facility near home for examination, diagnosed with acute pharyngitis and prescribed medicine to take at home, however the headaches got worse, the child became tired and vomited a lot. The family was very worried so they took the child to Hung Vuong General Hospital for examination.
Here, the PCR test results showed that the patient was positive for enterovirus. After 8 days of treatment according to the viral meningitis regimen, the child is alert, no longer feverish, in stable health condition and has been discharged from the hospital.

What is enteroviral meningitis?
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the spinal cord and brain. Enteroviruses are the most common cause (other causes are bacteria and fungi). Other viruses that can cause meningitis include herpes simplex and varicella-zoster, measles, mumps, rubella, and others.
Enterovirus meningitis is usually less serious than bacterial meningitis and other viral causes. Young children and people with weakened immune systems may become seriously ill.
Warning signs of enterovisus meningitis
Master, Doctor Tran Thi Cuom - Deputy Head of Pediatrics Department said: Viral meningitis is a meningitis caused by a virus. The disease occurs in all ages but the risk is higher in people with weakened immune systems and children.
The main symptoms of viral meningitis in general and enterovirus in particular can appear suddenly and include:
- Fever, chills, headache, stiff neck, nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia), loss of appetite, fatigue.
- Sometimes there are symptoms of a viral infection (such as a runny nose, cough, body aches or rash, before symptoms of meningitis appear).
- In infants, symptoms are often nonspecific and include: fever, vomiting, bulging fontanelle, poor feeding, excessive sleeping, etc.

How to prevent meningitis caused by enterovisus
According to doctors, there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for meningitis caused by EV, so to prevent the disease in children, parents and caregivers need to:
- Instruct children to wash their hands with soap before eating, after coughing, sneezing, and going to the toilet.
- Eat cooked food, boil water, and use clean food of clear origin.
- Clean shared toys, keep the living environment clean, disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, tables, and chairs to prevent the spread of viruses.
- Take your child to the nearest medical facility immediately if there are signs of vomiting, headache, or no response to fever-reducing medication for timely diagnosis and treatment by a doctor.
