In this year's election season, North Carolina is considered one of the 7 key battleground states with 16 electoral votes, equal to Georgia and second only to Pennsylvania (18 electoral votes). The remaining battleground states are Wisconsin (10 electoral votes), Arizona (11 electoral votes), Michigan (15 electoral votes) and Nevada (6 electoral votes).
'Fierce battlefield'
According to the latest survey results released by High Point University on October 3, both former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, received 48% support from potential voters in North Carolina. However, according to the national poll, Ms. Harris has the advantage among registered voters, with 48% support, leading former President Trump by 2 percentage points. The issues that North Carolina voters care about the most include: the economy, immigration, social security and abortion rights. In the final stage of the race to the White House, the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign team is stepping up efforts to attract voters who lean toward the Republican Party but are undecided. Some Republicans who have publicly endorsed Vice President Harris so far include notable faces such as former Vice President Dick Cheney, two former Representatives Liz Cheney (Wyoming) and Adam Kinzinger (Illinois), former Senator Jeff Flake (Arizona), former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan... On October 3, Ms. Liz Cheney even joined Vice President Harris' campaign in Ripon, Wisconsin, a place considered the birthplace of the Republican Party. Ms. Harris took advantage of her joint appearance with Ms. Cheney to demonstrate the spirit of bipartisan cooperation. The location of the rally is also considered a strategic move by Ms. Harris. The city of Ripon, located between Madison and Green Bay, is home to a school designated as a national historic landmark for hosting the first meetings that paved the way for the founding of the Republican Party in 1854.
With just a month to go before Election Day, observers say the White House is facing three challenges that could threaten Vice President Harris’s hopes. One is the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving military moves between Israel and Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran. The other is rising inflationary pressures due to a strike by nearly 50,000 International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) dockworkers at ports in the East and Gulf Coast that is blocking the flow of US imports and exports.
