Going green is no longer an option, but an urgent requirement for businesses around the world. However, the journey is not easy. The bottlenecks in the green transition process come from high investment costs, technological changes and connecting with real consumer needs.
The bottleneck in the green transformation of businesses
For many businesses, one of the biggest barriers to adopting green initiatives is investment costs. Building a sustainable management system, implementing new technology or converting production lines to reduce emissions requires significant financial resources. This is a significant pressure, especially for small and medium-sized companies.
According to the report "Readiness and difficulties of enterprises in green transformation" conducted by the Private Economic Development Board (Board IV), 50% of enterprises participating in the survey said they were facing difficulties in capital, of which only 5.9% of enterprises did not face financial difficulties. In particular, the heavy industry and agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors faced more serious difficulties, with the rates of 53.7% and 52.9%, respectively.
In addition, the lack of resources is also a cause of delay in the green transition process. Enterprises need not only capital but also knowledge, expertise and sufficient human resources to manage and operate new changes.
Another challenge is the large gap between the public’s desire for green consumption and its behavior. Although consumers are increasingly interested in environmentally friendly products, many shopping behaviors have not really caught up with this trend. This requires businesses to create innovative strategies to attract and change consumer behavior.
How Nestlé turns sustainability into a value driver
In that context, Nestlé Vietnam has found its own way, turning challenges into opportunities. In addition to focusing on green growth initiatives, Nestlé has combined sustainable development with consumers’ core motivations in shopping, turning it into a factor that drives value for the business.
Mr. Binu Jacob - General Director of Nestlé Vietnam shared: “One of the bottlenecks in the transformation process is connecting the sustainability story with the core motivations of consumers in making brand choice decisions. Businesses need to change their approach and connect with consumers based on understanding customers through their behaviors, needs, and preferences, so that sustainable initiatives can truly become a driving force for value creation.”
In addition, Nestlé Vietnam also focuses on promoting multi-stakeholder cooperation to create synergy. Through dialogue platforms such as the Vietnam Business Forum for Sustainable Development (VCSF), the company hopes to promote a more effective green transformation process, realizing the Net Zero commitment.
In every sustainable development strategy, people always play a core role. Mr. Khuat Quang Hung - Director of External Affairs and Communications of Nestlé Vietnam emphasized the importance of developing human resources with deep knowledge and expertise in sustainable development. To support this goal, Nestlé's Green Ambassador program was born. This is an initiative of Nestlé to build a core team of employees in activities to raise awareness of sustainable development, not only within the company but also to spread to partners and the community.
The Green Ambassador Program has become an important platform for Nestlé to spread and promote green lifestyles, effectively conveying the message of sustainable development throughout the enterprise's value chain.
Nestlé Vietnam has demonstrated that green transformation, despite its challenges, can be a driver of value if done in the right direction. By connecting sustainable initiatives with consumer needs and developing a dedicated workforce, Nestlé aims to realize its commitment to sustainable development, creating a positive impact on the environment and the planet, as well as creating long-term value for the entire business.
