In the first three quarters of 2023, the German federal government approved arms exports worth 8.76 billion euros and is expected to reach a record high by the end of 2023.
Figures released by the German Federal Ministry of Economics on October 2 show that in the first 9 months of 2023, Berlin approved the export of weapons worth more than last year (the whole of 2022 reached 8.35 billion euros).
With arms export turnover from the beginning of the year to date reaching 8.76 billion Euros, this is the second highest value in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The peak value reached in 2021, at 9.35 billion euros, is expected to be "broken" by the end of this year. During the 16 years in power of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, only five years did arms exports exceed the 6 billion euro mark.
Germany's largest arms recipient is Ukraine, with Berlin approving the export of 3.3 billion euros worth of military equipment to Kiev in the first three quarters of 2023.
With over 1 billion euros, the second largest recipient of German arms exports was Hungary, followed by the United States with 467 million euros.
Overall, over 90% of approved arms exports were to countries in the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or to “close partners” such as Ukraine and South Korea.
