A Su-34 with many tires on top
Several Russian military aircraft, including fighters and bombers, have been spotted with rubber tires covering their surfaces, leading to various theories and speculations.
Some observers believe it could be to fool imaging weapons, while others believe it is a shield. According to Insider on September 17, a US official has just confirmed that the purpose of the tires is to fool the enemy's aircraft detection equipment.
According to the chief technology officer of the US Central Command Schuyler Moore, the unusual Russian tactic could be used to make the aircraft unidentifiable by detection systems.
Biden says he is not afraid of Putin but has not allowed Ukraine to fire long-range missiles at Russia
“When you look for an airplane, if the airplane has a lot of tires on the wings, a lot of computer vision models have a hard time identifying it,” she said during a recent discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) and technology hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS-USA).
Russia was first spotted placing tires on its Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers last fall, following a series of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) attacks on its air bases by Ukraine.
This "unique move" was also applied after it was reported that Kyiv had modified the Neptune anti-ship cruise missile to attack land targets.

Not long after those images appeared, another image emerged of a Russian Su-34 bomber also covered in tires.
According to The War Zone , these tires can be used to block infrared signals from aircraft and confuse the targeting systems of some incoming munitions.
Moore did not specifically mention the Russian cases at the CSIS event, but noted them in a broader discussion about AI targeting.
Systemic adaptations must be made quickly, she said, otherwise an adversary could simply swap in something else to fool the system again.
Previously, Russia had painted pictures of fighter jets on runways at air bases, allegedly to confuse Ukrainian weapons' targeting systems.
And both Russia and Ukraine have used deception devices such as inflatable tanks, wooden missile launchers and fake radar reflectors, among other weapons.
