Add 420,000m3 of sand to the highway

On August 23, in the Tien River area, An Nhon commune, Chau Thanh district, Dong Thap province, VNCN E&C Construction and Engineering Investment Joint Stock Company coordinated with relevant departments and branches of Dong Thap province to organize the groundbreaking ceremony of the sand mining and filling project to serve the Cao Lanh - An Huu expressway, phase 1 - component project 1.

Sand mine serving the construction of Cao Lanh - An Huu expressway has begun exploitation.

Mr. Do Minh Chau, Deputy Director of VNCN E&C Construction and Engineering Investment Joint Stock Company (the contractor) said that the sand mine assigned by Dong Thap province to the company for exploitation under a special mechanism has an area of ​​18.02 hectares, located in An Hiep and An Nhon communes, Chau Thanh district.

The sand mine has a total reserve of about 674,953m3, of which the permitted reserve of sand for exploitation is 420,000m3. The sand mine exploitation period is 6 months (from August 2024 to February 2025), the environmental restoration period to close the mine is 6 months.

Sand mines are allowed to exploit to a depth of minus 17m using 2 scrapers (bucket capacity 3.5m3). Operating hours are from 7am to 5pm the same day, no exploitation at night. Sand exploitation capacity does not exceed 2,570m3/day and does not exceed 77,100m3/month.

"The sand mine in An Hiep commune, An Nhon, Chau Thanh district was put into operation at the time of urgent sand supply for the Cao Lanh - An Huu expressway project, component 1, helping to reduce pressure on exploitation capacity for the two previously exploited sand mines.

Thus, with 3 sand mines being exploited, the Cao Lanh - An Huu expressway component 1 will supply about 6,800m3/day, temporarily solving the need for sand for filling in August 2024. The contractor has prepared equipment, machinery, and site to receive sand for construction," said Mr. Chau.

Basically meet 1.7 million m3 of construction sand

According to Mr. Chau, the demand for sand filling materials for the Cao Lanh - An Huu Expressway project, component 1, is about 2.3 million m3. Of which, the demand in 2024 is 1.7 million m3.

Up to now, 3 sand mines that Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee introduced to the contractor have been put into operation to supply Cao Lanh - An Huu Expressway component 1, including: The first sand mine is located in Tan Thuan Dong commune, Cao Lanh city and My An Hung A and My An Hung B communes, Lap Vo district.

Waiting for more sand mines to be exploited will provide enough 1.7 million m3 of sand for highway construction in 2024.

The second sand mine is located in Thuong Lac commune, Long Khanh A, Hong Ngu district and An Lac ward, Hong Ngu city and the third sand mine is located in An Hiep commune, An Nhon, Chau Thanh district.

In order to ensure sufficient supply of sand and meet the project's construction progress, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province introduced an additional sand mine on Tien River, through Ward 11 and Tan Thuan Tay Commune, Cao Lanh City, to carry out sand mining procedures according to a special mechanism.

The contractor coordinated with the consultant to conduct exploratory drilling to determine sand reserves. The provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment has appraised the mineral reserves report, and it is expected that this sand mine will be put into operation in October 2024.

"Thus, with three sand mines already exploited and some mines expected to be exploited in the near future, the demand for 1.7 million m3 of sand for the construction of the Cao Lanh - An Huu expressway basically meets the progress," Mr. Chau informed.

Mr. Chau added that currently, at the construction site, the contractor has arranged human resources, materials and equipment for construction. Therefore, when sand arrives at the construction site, the contractor will increase pumping to key sections to shorten loading time.

"The sand pumping lines and equipment used to compact the roadbed are waiting. When the sand is mined and transported to the construction site, the contractor will immediately pump it up and carry out the next steps," said Mr. Chau.

The Cao Lanh - An Huu Expressway starts at the intersection with the My An - Cao Lanh Expressway in Cao Lanh District, Dong Thap Province. The end point is at the intersection with the Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway in Cai Be District, Tien Giang Province.
The project is divided into 2 components, Component 1 is 16km long, passing through Dong Thap province, with a total investment of over 3,600 billion VND. Component 2 is 11.4km long, located in Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces, with an investment of over 2,200 billion VND.
The scale of the completed phase cross-section meets the standards of a four-lane highway. The cross-section of phase 1 is divided into four-lane investment scales, with a roadbed width of 17m and an operating speed of 80km/h.
