After two weeks of releasing floodwaters, the Tri An Reservoir closed its floodgates at noon on August 25th. Hundreds of people from Vinh Cuu district and surrounding areas flocked to the foot of the Tri An dam to catch "giant" fish such as catfish, snakehead, carp, and tilapia.

According to Mr. Le Van Phat (Ma Da commune, Vinh Cuu district), whenever the Tri An hydroelectric dam releases water, fish from downstream follow the current upstream towards the dam, and when they encounter the spillway, they gather there.

Therefore, when the dam stopped releasing water, a large number of people from the surrounding area flocked to catch fish.

At exactly 1 PM, as soon as the Tri An hydroelectric dam (Vinh Cuu district, Dong Nai province ) closed its floodgates, while the water was still surging below, hundreds of people waiting on both banks rushed into the raging floodwaters.

They moved in small boats, on makeshift rafts, carrying nets and seines, hastily choosing a favorable spot before casting their nets and dropping their casts.

According to reports, this year the police force of Vinh An town (Vinh Cuu district) has banned people from using electric shock devices to catch fish. The number of people coming to watch is also higher than in previous years. Most people participating in catching fish come in groups, mainly for fun.

"There are three brothers from nearby who participate in fishing for fun because it only happens once a year. They cook the fish they catch or have a feast," Phát shared. Many other groups of fishermen also catch fish to sell to traders. The atmosphere during fishing is very lively. Each group chooses a specific area of ​​water to cast their nets.

Previously, on August 10th, due to the reservoir water level exceeding the flood level, while the inflow into the reservoir was high, reaching 1,200 m3/s, Tri An Hydropower Company released water through the spillway to regulate the reservoir.

A group of people from Vinh Dien town swam across the rocky area to cast their nets. According to the locals, the rocky area usually has many large fish.

After casting their nets for over 30 minutes, the two fishermen caught a fish weighing more than 10kg.

Many traders were waiting on the shore to inquire about buying the "giant" fish caught by locals at the foot of the Tri An dam.

As the largest hydroelectric project in the southern region, Tri An Hydroelectric Power Plant not only makes a significant contribution to the national power grid but also helps regulate water resources for domestic and agricultural use, push back saltwater intrusion, and control floods in the downstream area. Tri An Hydroelectric Power Plant was inaugurated and put into operation in 1991. Currently, the plant has four generating units with a total designed capacity of 400MW. It is expected that by the first quarter of 2025, two more generating units with a capacity of 200MW will be put into operation.
