(QBĐT) - In the early days of the spring of At Ty 2025, we walked along the banks of Gianh River, "admiring" the beauty of the mangrove forests growing strongly, forming "green walls" to shield and protect the dikes, fields, ponds, and villages along the river. Upon further investigation, we learned that this is the result of the Forestry Modernization and Coastal Resilience Enhancement Project (FMCR) implemented in Quang Binh province in recent years...
Mr. Tran Van Long, a fisherman exploiting aquatic products along the banks of Gianh River, across Quang Hai Commune (Ba Don Town) excitedly said: “Since the mangrove forest here was expanded, birds and many species of fish and shrimp have become more and more abundant, even some aquatic species that we had never seen in this area a few years ago. Quang Hai Commune is surrounded by rivers on all sides, now with the mangrove forest growing and expanding, it will contribute to protecting the locality more effectively during each flood season, thanks to blocking big waves and strong currents. Every time the mangrove fruit season comes, we just need to pick it and bring it to the market to sell to customers to cook sour soup, which is enough money to buy rice to eat every day. This is a good sign for people who depend on the river for a living like us.”
Since 2018, thanks to the support of the FMCR component project of Quang Binh province and a number of functional units in the province, localities along the Gianh River in Ba Don town have invested in protecting and coordinating the planting of new mangrove forests (mainly mangrove trees), such as: Quang Thuan ward planted 2.73ha; Quang Phong ward 0.37ha; Quang Loc commune 3.02ha; Quang Hai commune 0.66ha. In particular, Quang Van commune has protected and planted 10ha of new mangrove forests.
“Every time the tide recedes, the intertwined mangrove roots always “expose” many species of plankton, shrimp, fish, crabs... with economic value. That is also an abundant source of food that nature has given to “call” flocks of white storks and birds to come here to live. In the future, our locality plans to put some of these mangrove areas into eco-tourism and experience development to attract tourists, create more job opportunities, and increase income for people,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Thuan Ward. |
Currently, the average survival rate of trees in the above communes is basically 75-85%. It can be affirmed that the lush green mangrove forests surrounding the Gianh River banks have been and are playing an effective role in protecting dykes, fields, ponds, villages, helping people live in peace. Mangrove forests along the Gianh River banks also contribute to creating a diverse ecosystem, fresh air, an ideal living environment for aquatic products and birds; are effective in blocking waves, preventing salinity, keeping fresh water, fighting against high tides, landslides, riverside dykes...
Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Van Commune (Ba Don Town) said: “With the condition of being surrounded by water, for many years, the authorities and people of Quang Van Commune have been very interested in planting mangrove forests to prevent erosion. However, due to frequent severe floods, the area of mangrove forests formed in the locality has been devastated by natural disasters. Since 2021, thanks to the attention of superiors to invest in mangrove planting projects in the locality, the entire Quang Van Commune now has nearly 10 hectares of mangrove forests, mainly the Sonneratia species. When the mangrove forests have been restored, they have attracted many types of creatures such as crabs, crabs, shrimps, fish, crabs, and birds to take shelter. In general, mangrove forests have created a shield to protect people from big storms, at the same time, contributing to effectively preventing riverbank erosion and creating a beautiful landscape for the locality...”.
