Mikhail Shatsky, a Russian expert involved in modernizing missiles used to launch them into Ukraine, was killed by gunfire in Moscow, a Ukrainian military source told the Kyiv Independent on December 12.
The Ukrainian military intelligence service (HUR) is believed to be behind the incident, the source said. The man is believed to have died in Kuzminsky forest park near Kotelniki in Moscow region.
The US newspaper Newsweek also reported on the incident.
Russia has not commented on this information.
Mr. Shatsky was deputy head of the design bureau and head of the software department at the Moscow-based Mars Experimental Design Bureau. He is believed to have overseen the modernization of Russia's Kh-59 and Kh-69 cruise missiles.
The Mars Experimental Design Bureau, part of the state corporation Rosatom, is responsible for developing and manufacturing systems for automatic control and guidance on aircraft and spacecraft.
According to the source, Mr. Shatsky is considered the main proponent of introducing artificial intelligence (AI) technology into Russian drones, aircraft and spacecraft.
“Anyone who participates in the development of the Russian military-industrial complex and supports the Russian military operation in Ukraine in one way or another is a legitimate target of the Ukrainian Defense Forces,” the source said.
According to Kyiv Independent , since the outbreak of hostilities in 2022, Ukrainian intelligence agencies are believed to be involved in a number of assassinations of Russian military figures or pro-Russian politicians in Ukrainian territories controlled by Moscow.
