Traditional craft villages in Ninh Binh are craft villages with a long history, passed down through many generations and with the same craft ancestors. This is where the cultural space is combined with the livelihood of the local people. Therefore, preserving and promoting the values of the province's traditional craft villages requires synchronous solutions to promote sustainable development in the new context.
There are currently 77 recognized craft villages in the province, including 4 craft villages processing and preserving agricultural, forestry and aquatic products; 13 craft villages producing handicrafts; 46 craft villages producing wooden products, rattan and bamboo, ceramics, glass, textiles, yarn, embroidery, knitting, small mechanics; 11 craft villages producing and trading ornamental plants; 3 craft villages providing services to serve the lives of rural residents. The province has 2 products of craft villages that have achieved 4-star OCOP certification, which are Bo Bat pottery products and traditional embroidery products. The craft villages have created jobs for 26,732 local people with an average income of 36.4 million VND/person/year.
As one of the 12 typical traditional craft villages of the country with a long history, Van Lam embroidery village (Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu) is considered one of the places where the quintessence of Vietnamese embroidery converges, located in Tam Coc-Bich Dong tourist area. In recent years, Van Lam embroidery village has played an important role in completing the industrial and agricultural economic structure, contributing to increasing the proportion of the province's export value, increasing income for households and promoting the image of Ninh Binh land and people to the world.
Seizing this advantage, Mr. Vu Thanh Luan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Van Lam embroidery village, has completed the construction of a homestay tourism model at home with a scale of 10 rooms, mainly serving tourists who want to visit and experience the embroidery work in Van Lam. Here, visitors will be provided with materials for the embroidery process and have embroidery instructions, after completing the product, visitors can take it home as a souvenir... This is the first homestay tourism model of Van Lam embroidery village. In order to preserve the traditional craft village to serve tourism development, the local Party Committee, government as well as Van Lam people and some businesses in the area have changed their awareness to restore the traditional embroidery craft, especially color embroidery.
Nowadays, tourists coming to Tam Coc - Bich Dong are very interested in traditional embroidery products. Mr. Brice Van Huffel, a tourist from France said: I have returned to Tam Coc for the third time. I love this place not only because of the wonderful natural scenery but also because the local people are very friendly, your traditional embroidery products are very beautiful, I have bought embroidery products as gifts for my friends, they are all very excited and want to experience the traditional culture in Van Lam.
It can be said that traditional craft village tourism is an attractive form of cultural tourism, contributing to enriching Ninh Binh tourism products. The trend today is that people travel towards ancient cultural values. Developing craft village tourism is necessary, because it will bring many advantages to both tourism activities and the development of craft villages when it brings both economic and social benefits and contributes to preserving and promoting the unique cultural values of traditional crafts.
According to the assessment of professional agencies, the revenue of craft villages in the recent period has tended to increase at an average rate of 27.7%/year. However, in the current context, traditional craft villages are facing many barriers to preservation and development. Among them, the facilities and production technology equipment of some craft villages are still mainly manual, slow to innovate, leading to low productivity, product quality, environmental pollution...; many craft villages in the province are operating poorly and need to be transformed.
In reality, most of the production and business establishments in Ninh Binh's craft villages are household businesses with small capital, small-scale production and business, not large enough volume and especially very few products with brand names, so their competitiveness in the market is weak; lack of human resources with capacity, experience, qualifications... leading to the activities of craft villages being sluggish.
The report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development clearly shows that the rate of industry products recognized as OCOP products is still low. Up to now, the whole province has 9 craft village products recognized as OCOP products with 3 stars or more. The registration of product brands has not received attention. Although the province has a clear orientation for craft village products serving tourism, they are still few and monotonous, not competitive and there are not many souvenirs with Ninh Binh cultural characteristics.
Craft villages are only interested in tourists visiting the craft and introducing products, but have not paid attention to exploiting the value of landscapes, architecture of communal houses, pagodas, temples in the locality and integrated cultural values, community connection. In the new context, to develop craft villages in the province in a stable and sustainable direction, the province needs to have specific orientations for traditional craft villages to bring jobs, income, and promote economic development of the province. In particular, it is necessary to soon implement the planning for the development of occupations and craft villages in the context of socio-economic development planning, linked with local tourism development planning; develop markets and brands for craft villages; focus on building human resources, improving product competitiveness, environmental protection awareness...
The province needs to soon complete the policy of planning concentrated and stable raw material areas, especially with non-renewable raw materials of two traditional craft villages: fine art stone carving and Bo Bat ancient pottery, limiting the massive exploitation of raw materials with destructive nature. Develop policies to support the development of occupations, craft villages and traditional craft villages of the province. Strengthen brand building and trade promotion, promote product brands, boost exports, and take advantage of opportunities brought by free trade agreements.
Ninh Binh is a province with potential and advantages for tourism development, therefore, the development of traditional craft villages needs to be associated with the development of the tourism industry to preserve and promote the value of traditional craft villages, forming product brands. In particular, it is necessary to focus on infrastructure investment from capital sources to effectively exploit the tourism economy in areas with traditional craft villages; pay attention to and create conditions for craft villages to develop infrastructure, plan, and arrange craft villages reasonably; build areas to display products, and conduct trial production for visitors to participate. Encourage and mobilize the formation of cooperatives and enterprises in craft villages to act as the nucleus for craft village development.
