(Dan Tri) - Many Thai newspapers admitted to being heartbroken after witnessing their team collapse and seeing the Vietnamese team win the 2024 AFF Cup.
Overcoming Thailand, the Vietnamese team won the AFF Cup 2024
In the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final at Rajamangala Stadium on the evening of January 5, the Vietnamese team won 3-2 against Thailand. This result helped coach Kim Sang Sik and his team win the tournament with a 5-3 victory after two matches. It was a worthy reward for the efforts of the whole team.

Commenting on this match, many Thai newspapers expressed their sadness at seeing their team lose. Siam Sport wrote: "The Thai team has yet to win the Southeast Asian championship three times in a row."
The author emphasized: "The Thai team suffered a painful defeat against the Vietnamese team and could not win the AFF Cup for the third consecutive time. After leading 2-1, Thailand played with only 10 men and was defeated by the Vietnamese team with a 3-2 comeback win. The "Golden Dragons" won 5-3 after two matches and won the AFF Cup for the third time in history."
The Daily News headlined: "War Elephants heartbroken over missing out on AFF Cup title after being defeated by Vietnam at home." The newspaper said that the Thai team had prepared very carefully for this match. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra attended the match. Rajamangala Stadium was packed with spectators.
At one point, Thailand had the advantage of leading 2-1 against Vietnam. But then, the "War Elephants" lost control of the situation. Weerathep Pomphan's red card was the turning point of the match. From then on, Vietnam rose up and scored two goals.
Like Siam Sport, Daily News did not mention the heated controversy surrounding Supachok's goal.

However, Khaosod newspaper looked straight at reality. They wrote: "One match, 1000 events. Thailand team missed the championship". This newspaper commented: "Goalkeeper Dinh Trieu proactively threw the ball out of the field when observing his injured teammate. However, Thailand did not care about that. Supachok made a beautiful long-range shot, helping Thailand lead 2-1.
This goal has created controversy. Vietnamese players reacted strongly, saying that Thailand lacked fair play. The home players should have returned the ball in that situation. However, after consulting VAR, the referee recognized the goal for Thailand."
Khaosod also mentioned a series of other "events" in the match such as Weerathep Pomphan's red card, Pansa Hemviboon's own goal, Suphanan Bureerat's shot hitting the crossbar, or the situation where goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai left the goal, creating conditions for Hai Long to set the score at 3-2.
This newspaper emphasized: "Thailand cannot stop the Vietnamese team from achieving the third AFF Cup championship in history."
MGR Online used the word "resilient" to describe Thailand's fighting spirit. Instead of blaming the team, the newspaper praised the players. They said the "War Elephants" should forget the defeat and focus on the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers in March.

Meanwhile, Thairath newspaper "showed off" Thailand's championship trophy. They emphasized that the Golden Temple team is still the "king" of the Southeast Asian championship with 7 championships after 15 tournaments, equal to the two teams behind, Singapore (4 times) and Vietnam (3 times) combined.
Matichon newspaper quoted the President of the Football Association of Thailand, Madam Pang, affirming that she still believes in coach Masatada Ishii after the tournament. She also said that the failure at the AFF Cup 2024 is a big lesson for the Thai team.
According to the schedule, the Vietnamese team will return home at noon today (January 6). The whole team landed at Noi Bai airport at 2:00 p.m. Coach Kim Sang Sik's team is ready to celebrate with fans after a wonderful journey.
