Preserve historical and cultural artifacts

Hai Phong Museum covers an area of about 1 hectare, originally the headquarters of the Franco-Chinese Bank. In 1958, the Hai Phong City Party Committee issued a Resolution on the construction of the Museum. On December 20, 1959, Hai Phong Museum was officially inaugurated and opened to the public.

Ms. Bui Thi Nguyet Nga, Director of Hai Phong Museum, said that the Museum is not only a unique architectural work, but also a place to preserve historical artifacts. Each artifact here is a story about the sacrifice, dedication, and great contributions of generations through each period. With the excavation and display of relics and artifacts bearing the mark of the French colonial period and the development process of Hai Phong, the Museum is an ideal space to explore and better understand the richness of local cultural heritage. Here, visitors can admire the artifacts, check-in or participate in exhibition activities.

The number of artifacts used in the Museum's exhibition area is 1,736 artifacts, 840 images and documents. With a total exhibition area of 1,283 m2 and 16 exhibition rooms, Hai Phong Museum creates a diverse and lively space. The exhibition contents are divided into 12 major topics, covering natural resources, urban history, resistance, transportation, Vietnam's sea and islands , agriculture and economy .

In particular, the thematic area celebrating major holidays of the country and the City is a unique space, helping visitors better understand the richness and diversity of Hai Phong's history and culture.

As a young person passionate about traditional cultural values, Quoc Anh, a third-year student at Hai Phong University, shared: “Going to museums is a way for young people like me to find old values, increase knowledge and understanding, besides learning through books, newspapers and documents.”

Bridge between past and present

Over time, Hai Phong Museum is not only a place to preserve historical and cultural values, but also a bridge between the past, present and future. Each artifact preserved here is a living "witness".

Ms. Do Thi Mai Anh, a tour guide at the Museum, said that based on the concrete and vivid existence of valuable documents and artifacts, visitors have the opportunity to directly approach the events, phenomena, processes... that the artifacts reflect and represent.

In parallel with the exhibition of artifacts according to each historical period of the nation, Hai Phong Museum also regularly organizes thematic exhibitions. Thematic exhibitions that have left many impressions include "Imprints of historical autumn", "Red River civilization - Crystallization and shine". Through typical documents and images, thematic exhibitions have helped the public, especially the younger generation, to get closer to cultural and historical values.

Taking her children to visit the Museum, Ms. Nguyen Trang (Ngo Quyen District) confided: “My house used to be in Phu Dong Alley, near Hai Phong Museum. I remember when I was a student, my friends and I often went to the Museum. This is not only a place to preserve artifacts, but also a place for us to learn more about history and culture. Now that I am a mother of two children, I still regularly take my children to the Museum, so that they can understand about culture, history, and be grateful to previous generations. Many times, my two children proactively wanted their parents to take them to the Museum.”

Currently, in addition to Hai Phong Museum, the City also has many "red addresses" of relics with cultural , traditional and historical values such as: Navy Museum, Military Zone 3 Museum, Bach Dang Giang Relic Site, Cao Quy Stake Yard, K15 Wharf, Nghieng Wharf, Trang Trinh Nguyen Binh Khiem Relic Site...

In response to the 2024 Red Flamboyant Festival, from May 11 to the end of December 2024, the City will display about 300 artifacts from the An Bien treasure collection, including 21 national treasures at the Hai Phong Museum. The artifacts selected for display date from the Dong Son culture to the Dai Viet nation in the 19th century.
