Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper officially launches special data journalism project

On the afternoon of April 23, Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper officially launched a special data journalism project called “Ho Chi Minh City 50 years: Proud imprints through the pages of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper,” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South, National Reunification and the 50th anniversary of the first issue of Saigon Giai Phong (May 5, 1975 - May 5, 2025).

The project systematizes information from the first publications of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper, depicting the proud marks of Ho Chi Minh City in the reconstruction, construction and development over the past 50 years with a dynamic, innovative spirit, affirming the pioneering role of Ho Chi Minh City for the whole country, with the whole country.

Born right after the liberation of the South, with the advantage of being the only daily newspaper published in Ho Chi Minh City at that time and for decades after, Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper of the Party Committee, government and people of Ho Chi Minh City has become the "secretary of the times," vividly reflecting all aspects of daily political and social life of Ho Chi Minh City over the past half century.

With this data project, readers can clearly imagine the excitement and joy of the people of Saigon city in the first days of liberation; the difficulties, challenges and great efforts of the Saigon-Gia Dinh City Military Management Committee in maintaining security and order, reviving new life of a chaotic post-war urban area, which just yesterday was the enemy's headquarters with many consequences and remnants left behind.

Through this elaborate data work, readers can review the developments and proud marks through 11 Congresses of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee; with drastic decisions, activities, and key projects that changed the face of the city.

Through the project, digitized data, visual presentation, and diverse information, Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper hopes to bring readers the proud, unforgettable historical memories of the Party Committee, government, and people of the city named after beloved Uncle Ho over the past half century.

The project is presented in multimedia form, from longform, infographic, video... to help readers easily experience.

The project also demonstrates the responsibility of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper in the era of national development, towards the goal of Vietnam becoming a developed, high-income country by 2045.

At the launch, Deputy Editor-in-Chief in charge of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper Nguyen Khac Van said: "Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper has an extremely valuable treasure, which is the content of about 17,000 issues of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper published over the past 50 years. And this is our first data journalism project to exploit this treasure, serving readers on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification. We have been digitizing all paper issues of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper, to create multimedia data journalism products to serve the public, or to serve the search/lookup/research work of organizations and individuals in need."

Attending the launch, comrade Nguyen Manh Cuong, member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, commented that the work gathered many valuable documents accumulated and stored by Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper from the first issues until now, creating a publication that not only serves readers, but is also a valuable source of documents and data, effectively serving research and synthesis work.

The project is even more meaningful when it was completed and launched on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day, and at the same time, towards the 50th anniversary of the first issue of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper.

“The project is a milestone, a mark affirming the effectiveness in carrying out the tasks of the newspaper”, the Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee commented and expressed that the method and approach to implementing the project are very suitable for the current trend of digital transformation of the press. From this result, Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper needs to continue to promote, focus on approaching, processing, restoring and digitizing data, along with clearly defining the production and operation methods with the application of artificial intelligence (AI), in order to contribute to further promoting the development of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper in the coming time.

He hoped that, from the concrete and meaningful results of the project, Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper would continue to make stronger strides in the digital transformation of journalism. Through the massive archive of documents and scientific approaches in the project, the Newspaper would also need to continue reviewing and synthesizing to exploit more rich materials, better serving the leadership and direction of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

The Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee affirmed that he will always accompany and create favorable conditions for Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper to continue to develop, meeting the requirements and expectations set by the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee./.
