On the afternoon of October 24, Bao Phuong Vinh (Group H), Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu (Group E) and Nguyen Hoan Tat (Group G) played their opening match in the 32nd round of the Veghel 2024 Billiards World Cup. Accordingly, Phuong Vinh met Orak Turgay (Türkiye), Thanh Tu faced the "living legend" of the world's 3-cushion carom billiards village Torbjorn Blomdahl (Sweden), and Hoan Tat faced Tasdemir Tayfun (Türkiye).
Bao Phuong Vinh's match was extremely exciting, as big series continuously appeared. When leading 18-15, the player from Binh Duong suddenly launched a series of 15 points in the 7th turn to lead 33-15, bringing the match into the break.
Bao Phuong Vinh played well but unfortunately lost when his opponent was not inferior.
It seemed like Bao Phuong Vinh would have an easy victory over Orak Turgay, but the ending was very surprising. The Turkish player had a terrible breakthrough. In the 9th turn, Orak Turgay had a series of 9 points to shorten the gap to 24-35. In the 11th turn, when Phuong Vinh was leading 37-25, Orak went on a streak of 15 points to reach 40 points first.
Bao Phuong Vinh scored only 2 points and had to accept a regretful defeat 39-40 against Orak. It was hard to believe that the Vietnamese player scored a series of 15 points and achieved an efficiency of 3.545 points/turn but still lost the match.
The match at the same time in Group G between Nguyen Hoan Tat and Tasdemir Tayfun also witnessed a "huge" series. When leading 23-18, Tasdemir Tayfun threw a series of 17 points, to end the match with a 40-18 victory over Hoan Tat.
Thanh Tu surprised with victory over Blomdahl
Meanwhile, Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu faced a very strong opponent, Torbjorn Blomdahl. Blomdahl is considered a "living legend" of 3-cushion carom billiards in the world, having won the World Cup 46 times and the World Championship 7 times.
Blomdahl started the game very quickly, but Thanh Tu played very calmly and gradually regained control of the game. Since the 11th turn, the Vietnamese player took the lead and controlled the game. In the end, Thanh Tu caused a big surprise when he defeated Blomdahl 40-28, after 19 turns.
With this victory, Thanh Tu's chances of advancing become brighter. Meanwhile, Bao Phuong Vinh and Nguyen Hoan Tat, despite losing their opening match in the round of 32, still have a lot of hope to get tickets to the round of 16 of the Veghel 2024 3-cushion carom billiards World Cup.
