>> Tran Yen: New opportunities for mulberry growing and silkworm raising
Since the local policy on developing mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising has been in place, Ms. Ta Thi Ngoc’s family in Dong Trang village has converted more than 3 sao of ineffective rice to mulberry cultivation. From a small scale, after accumulating more experience and learning from many different sources, Ms. Ngoc’s family’s mulberry area has now expanded to nearly 1 mau, generating an annual income of over 60 million VND.
Ms. Ngoc said: "Since growing mulberry to raise silkworms, my family's life has improved a lot. Raising silkworms is not difficult, but we have to regularly go online to learn and participate in training courses organized by the locality to improve raising techniques to reduce costs and achieve the best productivity and quality of cocoons. For silkworm raising, the hardest part is the 3 days when the silkworms are free to eat, but in return, raising silkworms gives many times higher economic value than traditional farming (growing rice, growing corn).
The silkworm farming profession not only brings joy and excitement to Ms. Ngoc but also helps many other households in the village have a stable income, striving to have a full and prosperous life. Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong in Dong Trang village shared: "Initially, my family only had 5 sao of mulberry, but now it has grown to about 1.5 hectares. With the attention and support of the local government, my family has access to credit loans from the district's Social Policy Bank to expand the scale of production development, so my family has invested in converting from traditional silkworm farming using trays or raising on the floor to raising on sliding trays. Each year, the silkworm cocoon output is about 900 kg, bringing in an income of 160 million VND/year".
Implementing the Project on Developing Mulberry and Silk in Tran Yen District for the period 2020 - 2025, in the past time, Bao Dap commune has focused on propagating and mobilizing people to consolidate land to expand the area of mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing. Along with that, coordinating with units to link up the consumption of silkworm cocoon products; transferring science and technology to farmers; supporting deferred payment of fertilizers; supporting funding for purchasing seedlings, silkworm cages, building and repairing silkworm houses... Up to now, the commune has more than 500 households growing mulberry and silkworm rearing with a total area of nearly 200 hectares, concentrated in the villages of Dinh Xay, Dong Sam, Dong Gianh, Dong Gach, Dong Buoi, Dong Trang. In 2024, silkworm cocoon output will reach over 235 tons, bringing in tens of billions of VND in revenue.
Mr. Tran Duc Tien - Chairman of Bao Dap Commune People's Committee, Tran Yen District said: "To further expand and develop the mulberry growing and silkworm raising profession, in recent times, the commune has actively directed and assigned cadres to the villages to guide people in applying scientific and technical advances in production; mobilize people to grow mulberry using organic methods, and apply mechanization to production to increase the efficiency of mulberry growing.
At the same time, the commune also coordinated with relevant agencies, departments and offices of the district to organize short-term training courses on mulberry growing techniques for people to participate in learning and directly applying the learned methods to improve the efficiency of mulberry growing and silkworm raising. In the 2020-2025 term, the orientation of the local government is to continue expanding the mulberry growing area, each household will have an average of about 5-10 sao. From there, specialized mulberry fields will be formed, applying advanced scientific and technical measures to improve mulberry productivity and silkworm cocoon output, aiming to form a concentrated production area, building the Bao Dap mulberry and silkworm brand.
With the proven advantages of mulberry cultivation and sericulture, along with current market demand, the development of mulberry cultivation and sericulture will be the first step in shifting the structure of rural industries, thereby helping to promote the potential of soil, climate as well as rural labor resources, creating opportunities to help households in Bao Dap commune in particular and Tran Yen district in general to develop sustainably.
