Electricity regulation at Thanh Hoa 500kV Substation.
In the Nghi Son Economic Zone, two large thermal power plants, Nghi Son 1 and Nghi Son 2, are contributing a significant amount of electricity to the system. Since the beginning of 2025, both plants have been operating stably, meeting the system's power generation requirements.
At Nghi Son Thermal Power Company – the operator of Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant – the company has proactively signed contracts for coal supply with a volume that meets the 2025 operating plan; simultaneously, it coordinates with suppliers to control coal quality, optimize fuel efficiency, and contribute to safe and efficient operation. According to the company representative, to proactively plan for stable production and operation during the 2025 dry season, the company has proactively carried out repairs and prevented incidents during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, when the power system load is low. In addition, the company focuses on operational management, compiling and continuously updating operating and repair procedures to ensure compliance with changes in the technical features and control systems of the equipment; helping to improve the plant's operational efficiency and ensure stable equipment operation, minimizing the risk of incidents.
At the Trung Son Hydropower Plant, in anticipation of the severe dry season predicted for 2025, Trung Son Hydropower Company Limited has proactively developed and implemented numerous optimal operational solutions to ensure safe, continuous, and efficient electricity supply. The company has intensified equipment inspection and maintenance, ensuring efficient operation of the generating units and readiness for deployment when needed. In particular, meteorological and hydrological forecasts are continuously updated to regulate reservoir levels in accordance with actual conditions, minimizing risks from extreme weather events.
Mr. Vu Xuan Dung, Director of Trung Son Hydropower Company Limited, said: “To ensure the effective simultaneous operation of electricity generation and water supply for downstream production, the company will continue to optimize water regulation and reservoir operation; ensuring stable electricity supply to the national power grid and sufficient water supply for the living and production needs of people in the downstream area during the 2025 dry season. Information related to water regulation will be promptly communicated to relevant agencies and the community for close coordination, avoiding water and electricity shortages.”
To ensure uninterrupted power supply and meet production and consumption needs, Thanh Hoa Power Company is also implementing a series of measures to cope with the increased load during the dry season. Inspection and maintenance of medium and low voltage power grids are being intensified; substations are being cleaned, and old or damaged equipment is being replaced to prevent overloading and short circuits during prolonged periods of hot weather. The company is also promoting the application of technology in operational management, such as SCADA systems, remote metering, and grid automation, thereby reducing incident response time and improving the reliability of power supply.
According to Mr. Hoang Hai, Director of Thanh Hoa Power Company: "Along with promoting electricity saving awareness programs to people and businesses, Thanh Hoa Power Company is coordinating with localities and production facilities to develop plans for rational electricity use and shift the operating hours of large production lines to reduce the load on the power system during peak hours."
Since the beginning of the year, the power supply situation in the province has been basically stable, meeting the production and business needs of enterprises and the daily lives of the people. In the first quarter of 2025, the electricity production of power plants reached 3.4 billion kWh. Commercial electricity reached 1.81 billion kWh, an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period. To ensure safe and stable electricity supply to serve socio-economic development and the daily lives of the people in 2025, in March 2025, the Minister of Industry and Trade issued a document requesting the investors of power plants to continue to urgently and proactively quickly overcome technical incidents and defects of the generating units to ensure stable operation, comply with the dispatch orders of the National Power System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) to meet the needs of the power system. The Ministry of Industry and Trade also requested the power plants to strengthen monitoring and closely supervise the operating status of the plant's equipment; Proactively conduct periodic inspections, promptly detect and thoroughly rectify defects, and ensure sufficient spare parts to enhance reliability; strictly implement the approved maintenance and repair plan, minimizing prolonged adjustments and unscheduled repairs during the dry season that could affect electricity supply security.
