Aquaculture is vulnerable to damage from extreme weather, especially during the rainy and stormy season. To minimize damage, the agricultural sector, localities and farmers in the province have been proactively implementing many solutions to prevent, combat and limit risks.

Ensuring safety of aquaculture areas during the rainy and stormy season People in Ha Trung commune (Ba Thuoc) reinforce fish cages before the storm season.

Since 2017, Mr. Truong Van Tan's family in Chieng Ai village, Ha Trung commune (Ba Thuoc) has developed cage fish farming, with varieties such as grass carp, bighead carp, and catfish... However, due to lack of technical experience in disease prevention, control, and climate change, the family often suffers losses during the rainy and stormy season. Since 2019, along with 20 other households in the village, Mr. Tan joined the village's cage fish farming association and was trained in farming techniques, maintaining and developing the profession, especially during the rainy and stormy season, so economic efficiency is guaranteed. Mr. Tan said: "Thanks to learning farming experience from members of the Association and researching techniques and care processes, before the rainy season, the family proactively increased the fish's resistance; regularly cleaned the cage area, ensuring a good living environment for the fish, avoiding diseases. At the same time, we reinforced the cages and auxiliary works that can withstand the effects of storms and floods. If the weather forecast is for heavy storms and floods, we urgently harvest the farmed aquatic products that have reached commercial size, move the cages and rafts to safe shelters. At the same time, we invested in buying more floating tanks, reinforcing the pillars, and replacing old and torn nets to avoid loss of output."

Extensive aquaculture has brought income to the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham, My Dien village, Da Loc commune (Hau Loc) for many years. However, aquaculture, such as shrimp, crab, fish... also has many risks, especially during the rainy season, due to the risk of flooding and water pollution. Ms. Tham said: "To protect the aquaculture area during the rainy season, my family invested in building dams around the extensive aquaculture pond, building drainage culverts, clearing the drainage system, and preventing flooding for the aquaculture area. At the same time, part of the extensive aquaculture area was converted to industrial farming in round tanks, lined with tarpaulins to control the environment, air, and temperature in the tanks. Along with that, during the rainy season, the family always focuses on enhancing the resistance of the farming objects, and harvesting the area in preparation for harvest to limit loss and damage."

Currently, the province has about 19,500 hectares of aquaculture, of which the freshwater farming area is 14,000 hectares, the brackish water farming area is 4,500 hectares, and the saltwater farming area is 1,000 hectares. Besides the areas invested in solid and modern technical infrastructure, applying advanced farming techniques, most of the aquaculture areas in the province are in the direction of semi-intensive and extensive farming, the infrastructure is not synchronized, so there is a potential risk of overflowing and flooding when there is prolonged heavy rain.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dong, Head of Thanh Hoa Fisheries Sub-Department, said: To protect aquaculture areas, since the beginning of June, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa has issued a document directing and providing specific instructions on technical measures to handle before, during and after storms for each farming area in ponds, lagoons, lakes, riverside areas, coastal tidal farming... At the same time, it guides localities to organize inventory and review aquaculture areas, proactively take response measures when heavy rains and storms occur. In particular, focusing on harvesting shrimp and fish areas that have reached commercial size to limit losses and economic damage when storms and floods occur and well preparing breeds, feed, chemicals, biological products to care for, protect and prevent diseases so that aquaculture can achieve high economic efficiency.
