Indonesia - the sole representative of Southeast Asian football - has created many surprises in its first participation in the third qualifying round of the World Cup in Asia. The team from the archipelago has not won any matches but has not suffered defeat either.
Coach Shin Tae-yong's team drew with Saudi Arabia, Australia and Bahrain. In all three matches, Indonesia made life difficult for their opponents thanks to their solid defense and formidable ability to take advantage of opportunities.

Indonesia has not broken the record for the total number of points in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers for Southeast Asian teams. Vietnam has 4 points in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. However, neither Vietnam nor Thailand have ever gone 3 matches without losing in this round.
According to the new format of the 48-team World Cup, the third qualifying round of the Asian region has 18 participating teams divided into 3 groups. The first and second teams in each group will qualify for the World Cup. The third and fourth teams will continue to compete in the final qualifying round to determine 2 more teams for the World Cup and 1 team will play a play-off match with a representative from another continent.
