BUSINESSES DOUBT THE SITUATION
Regarding the data announced by some universities that 60-70% of students graduated with honors and distinctions, Ms. Nguyen Truong Quoc Trinh, CEO of Minh Thai Investment and Trading Company Limited (HCMC), commented: "In reality, there are candidates with very good transcripts but do not grasp when asked about a subject they have studied. That shows that although not all, there are cases where scores do not truly reflect the student's ability."
Students learn about recruitment information at the job fair
Ms. Trinh also admitted that there are quite a lot of excellent graduates nowadays. According to her, about 3 years ago, recruiting for the same position with a salary of 6-7 million VND/month, they usually only received applications from students with good grades. But now, businesses can easily find students with good grades.
"Although we cannot assume that all students who graduate with honors are not qualified, when the majority of students graduate with honors, we still have to think about it," Ms. Trinh raised the issue.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Chairman of the Trade Union of Dai Dung Construction Mechanical Trading Joint Stock Company, said that monitoring the actual situation, it can be seen that schools are "relaxing" the evaluation process, leading to a situation where many students graduate with good or excellent grades.
"If there are too many excellent graduates, the value of the degree will be lost. Schools need to study how to ensure the evaluation results follow the pyramid model - that is, the rate of excellent is at least, the level increases gradually from good to fair and then average. As for the current situation in some schools, the rate of excellent is higher, so this model seems to be an inverted pyramid," Mr. Hung analyzed.
Associate Professor Dr. Do Van Dung, senior advisor of Deo Ca Group, said that according to the current assessment method, only 2-3% of students are average each year, the rest are good or better, so this number is not realistic. According to Dr. Dung, current scores do not reflect true ability and do not say anything. The ability of learners needs to be demonstrated specifically in knowledge and skills.
MOST BUSINESSES DO NOT CARE ABOUT GRADUATION RANKING
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung said: "Perhaps it comes from the fact that universities are competing with each other to give students good degrees that make it easier to find jobs. But in reality, businesses do not pay much attention to what kind of degree students graduate with. When schools do that, good and excellent degrees lose their value, reducing the motivation of students to strive and the motivation for education improvement."
Recruiting people without a university degree for management positions
Mr. Vu Ngoc Son emphasized: "When recruiting, we do not look at scores. Maybe because of the nature of the information technology industry. Of the current employees of my company (network security sector - PV), about 10% (about 14 - 15 people) have not graduated from university, because they do not meet the graduation requirements. Among those who have not graduated from university, some have higher salaries than those who have graduated from university, some are still in management positions".
Mr. Dang Vo Son, Deputy General Director of Corporation 36, Ministry of National Defense, affirmed: "When recruiting, we do not care whether students graduate with excellent or good grades. Because the reality of work shows that attitude towards work is very important, not the degree. Many people with good degrees often demand good preferential conditions, have a complacent mentality, while in reality, in the work, we do not know who is good. Moreover, good people often have a "job-hopping" mentality, causing the company to waste time recruiting and retraining. When recruiting, the subsidiaries of my corporation often pay attention to the experience factor, to which school the student attended, and the degree is not important."
Mr. Dang Vo Son said: "Recently, to build the highway project in Can Tho and Hau Giang, we recruited a series of engineers to serve the field work, all with good and fair degrees, but in reality, when they went to the construction site, they were clumsy and did not know how to start with the simplest tasks, they were really not as good as the foremen and "first" workers. Of course, we cannot expect students to be proficient in their work right after graduation. But right in the training environment, they must practice a lot at the construction site, with all kinds of job positions, from workers to technical staff and engineers."
Lecturer of the University of Transport introduces to students the technology of treating Thang Long bridge surface researched by the school.
Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung said: "When recruiting, we do not require the candidate's graduation ranking and do not give any priority to the diploma ranking. Instead, a diploma is only a necessary condition and the important thing is that the candidate's actual capacity is assessed during a 1-2 month probationary period at the enterprise."
Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Truong Quoc Trinh said that this company cares about the graduation ranking of candidates when recruiting. "In the current context, recruiting a staff is not only to fill a vacancy but also to prioritize personnel who have graduated from good or above to minimize risks at work. Therefore, our company's staff has 90% of university and college degrees, of which 75% have graduated from university with good or above and about 10 - 15% have graduated with good or excellent grades," Ms. Trinh said.
GRADUATES OF ANY KIND NEED ADDITIONAL TRAINING
Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, Technical Director of National Cyber Security Technology Joint Stock Company (NCS), said that the evaluation of schools and scores partly reflect the ability of students. The evaluation system of schools is now quite good, compared to 20 years ago.
"However, schools should add assessments of students' ability to solve practical problems. I have recruited thousands of students to work, and I have found that the scores they achieved in university reflect whether they have good input quality or not, whether they have internal strength or not, but I can confirm that almost all graduates have to be retrained when they go to work. Normally, those with good results are retrained faster, but that does not mean that those with not-so-good scores cannot do the job. Even if they are assigned a job position that suits their qualities, many students can perform better than those who graduated with honors," said Mr. Son.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung emphasized: "Studying at school and working in a business have certain differences. Therefore, a newly graduated student, regardless of their classification, needs to be trained in additional things necessary for the specific job. But for good students, the process of grasping new things happens faster, they have better thinking and adapt better."
Increase real-world learning time
According to Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, universities should increase the time for students to study in real life. Currently, final year students usually do internships, when everything is arranged, and the internship time is often short. Students should be allowed to do internships from the second or third year. Students will have two starting points: the teacher's score and the company's score.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Son, Deputy Head of the Department of Personnel and Labor, Vietnam Aviation Corporation, cited evidence showing that if there is training coordination between schools and businesses, graduates can easily meet the requirements. "The main source of labor we recruit is graduates of Vietnam Aviation Academy. Because the academy's training program is built on the basis of coordination with Vietnam Aviation Corporation, to serve human resources for the industry, there is a fairly good response. During the training process, students practice regularly, the school is equipped with simulation equipment to teach students. Because the training model is linked to businesses, students are motivated to learn (after graduation, they are guaranteed a job). The school trains and evaluates the substance so that businesses can effectively use the training products," Mr. Dinh Son commented.
