A Trump supporter running for re-election in 2024
Reuters reported that the trial in Colorado is expected to last 1 week, based on a lawsuit filed by the organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW, headquartered in Washington DC).
According to the lawsuit, CREW used the 14th Amendment to block Mr. Trump's name from appearing on the state's ballot in the 2024 US election.
Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment, ratified in 1868, reads: "Whoever, as a member of Congress, or an officer of the United States, or of any State legislature, or of any executive or judicial officer of any State, shall have taken an oath to support the Constitution of the United States, and shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same" is barred from holding public office.
Former US President Donald Trump was sworn in to the US Constitution at his inauguration on January 20, 2017. Therefore, CREW believes that he is disqualified from running for office due to his incitement of the mob during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
Representing six Colorado voters, CREW petitioned state election officials to prevent Mr. Trump's name from appearing on the ballot in the 2024 US presidential election.
Mr Trump faces similar lawsuits in states like Michigan and Minnesota. However, Colorado is the first state to move forward with the case.
The former US president has always led in polls as a potential Republican candidate to run against incumbent US President Joe Biden, who is running for re-election as a Democrat.
Trump's opponents want to find a way to prevent him from being elected as the Republican candidate, but many legal experts are skeptical about this possibility.
Even if the judges rule in favor of CREW, the final say still belongs to the Supreme Court. Conservatives currently hold a 6-3 majority on the U.S. Supreme Court, three of whom were nominated by Mr. Trump.
