In the early hours of November 3rd, Fluminense FC's official website announced the departure of defender Marcelo after more than a year with the club. The team stated that this was a mutual decision, affirming that the relationship between Marcelo and Fluminense remains unaffected.
"Fluminense sincerely thanks Marcelo. We will continue to support him on his journey ahead," Fluminense's media wrote.
Marcelo refused to come onto the field as instructed by the coach.
On November 2nd, during the match between Fluminense and Gremio in the Brazilian National League, coach Menezes asked Marcelo to warm up and prepare to come on in the final minutes. However, the former Real Madrid star disagreed with Menezes' decision. He argued with the 62-year-old coach on the sidelines and refused to take to the field.
Menezes was forced to change his plans, bringing on striker John Kennedy. Under pressure from Gremio, Fluminense conceded a goal in the final minute of injury time, dropping two points at their home stadium, Maracana.
After the match, coach Menezes expressed his dissatisfaction with Marcelo's attitude: "I wanted to substitute Marcelo, but he didn't want to. I had to change my strategy because of him. Marcelo came on to preserve the score, not to solve any further problems. When I wanted him to come on, there were only 2 or 3 minutes left in the game."
As for Marcelo, he made no comment on the controversy on November 2nd. Less than 48 hours after the draw between Fluminense and Gremio, Marcelo and the Brazilian team parted ways.
Marcelo is a former Real Madrid defender. He and his close friend Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the wing-back positions in European football for many years. However, after Ronaldo's departure, Marcelo lost his starting place to Ferland Mendy and subsequently left Real Madrid in the summer of 2022.
Marcelo is a close friend of Ronaldo.
He played for Olympiacos for about six months before joining Fluminense in March 2023. There, Marcelo won the Rio de Janeiro state championship with the club, culminating in the Copa Libertadores title.
However, Fluminense did not perform well in the 2024-2025 season, currently sitting 12th in the league table after 32 rounds. The team's decline in form is seen as one of the reasons for Marcelo's departure.
At 36, the former Brazilian international is almost certainly not returning to Europe. His next destination is likely to be Major League Soccer (MLS) or the Saudi Arabian Premier League (SPL).
