Whether you're just starting out or have been doing it for a few weeks, there are some habits you should avoid altogether. Victoria Brady, personal trainer at Fyt—the largest personal training service in the United States—has identified five bad habits that can hinder your weight loss.

It's hard to lose weight if you eat or snack mindlessly.

According to Brady, mindless eating or snacking throughout the day is a surefire way to slow down your weight loss progress. Why? You lose track of how many calories you're consuming, which can lead to overeating.

“It doesn't matter if it's a 'healthy' food or not, eating too much of anything can be a bad thing,” Brady explains.

“Instead, practice portion control to keep track of how many calories you consume throughout the day and minimize overeating.”

You skip meals

Skipping meals puts your body into "survival mode," Brady explains, meaning you'll hold back on the calories you consume to conserve energy.

"Plus, it's easy to make unhealthy food choices because you're hungry, like stopping at a fast food joint because it's the quickest option for a meal," she adds.

You drink calories

Whether you're sipping on juice or your favorite glass of wine, remember that drinks can be high in calories.

“Many people don’t realize the calories in most drinks, along with the large amounts of sugar added to enhance the flavor,” Brady shares. “Not only does consuming too much sugar lead to weight gain, but drinking alcohol, in particular, can slow down your metabolism.”

You are not getting enough rest

Don't underestimate the power of a good night's sleep and post-workout recovery. Research shows that the less sleep you get, the more likely you are to gain weight.

"Your body can't recover, which can throw off your hormone balance and trigger cravings because your body tends to crave foods that are high in carbohydrates and calories when you're sleep deprived," Brady explains.

"Remember that rest days are necessary, and training too much can cause you to stall your weight loss and increase your risk of injury."

You prioritize exercise over nutrition

Exercise is key to any weight loss program, but there needs to be a balance between exercise and nutrition. Because, you can't "work out to make up for an unhealthy diet."

“This is where the 80/20 rule of weight loss comes in,” she explains. “80 percent of weight loss is based on what you eat, while the remaining 20 percent is based on what you do, which is exercise.

This means that you cannot exercise to compensate for a high-calorie diet. No matter how much you exercise, if your diet is too high in calories, you will not lose weight.

You have to burn more calories than you consume, and most people don't realize that only a small portion of the calories you burn during the day come from exercise."

So, if you want to lose weight, you must focus on a proper diet and control your calorie intake.
