Total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue in January 2025 is estimated at VND 573.3 trillion, up 2.7% over the previous month and up 9.5% over the same period last year (in the same period in 2024, it increased by 8.0%), if excluding the price factor, it increased by 6.6% (in the same period in 2024, it increased by 5.6%).
Total level retail goods and consumer service revenue at current prices in January 2025 increased sharply compared to the same period last year thanks to the positive contribution of the accommodation, food and beverage, and travel and tourism services industry.
In particular, tourism is considered a bright spot because this year's Tet holiday is long, helping to attract a large number of people to tourist destinations. According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, during the 2025 Lunar New Year (from January 25 to February 2, or December 26 to the 5th day of Tet), the tourism industry nationwide is expected to welcome and serve 12.5 million domestic visitors, an increase of 19% over the same period in 2024. Specifically, retail sales of goods in January 2025 are estimated at VND 441.4 trillion, up 8.6% over the same period last year, of which: Other fuels (excluding gasoline) increased by 31.1%; precious stones, precious metals and products increased by 15.5%; automobiles of all kinds increased by 11.6%; cultural and educational items increased by 8.9%; garments increased by 8.3%; food and foodstuffs increased by 7.8%; household appliances, tools and equipment increased by 1.5%.
Retail sales of goods in January 2025 compared to the same period last year in some localities are as follows: Hai Phong increased by 9.2%; Hanoi increased by 9.0%; Quang Ninh increased by 8.5%; Ho Chi Minh City increased by 8.4%; Da Nang increased by 7.9%.
Revenue from accommodation and catering services in January 2025 is estimated at VND 67.3 trillion, up 14.8% over the same period last year. Revenue from tourism and travel in January 2025 is estimated at VND 5.1 trillion, up 17.3% over the same period last year due to high demand for travel from domestic and international visitors during the holidays and Tet in January.
Other service revenue in January 2025 is estimated at VND 59.5 trillion, up 9.8% over the same period last year.
The highlight of the supply of goods in January is the preparation of Tet goods. According to reports from localities, the total value of the expected reserve supply of enterprises is estimated to increase by about 10-15% compared to normal months of the year.
Notably, to prepare a stable source of goods for the Tet market, localities have proactively implemented many trade promotion programs, connecting supply and demand, creating sources of goods for Tet, especially between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other localities. Through these programs, thousands of specialties and OCOP products have reached consumers, contributing to supporting localities in consuming products, while helping to bring regional specialties to city consumers, especially during holidays and Tet, in line with the increasing consumer trend of using regional specialties during Tet and as gifts.
Tet market situation report Domestic Market Department – The Ministry of Industry and Trade shows that purchasing power for fresh food groups starts to increase from the 20th of Tet (January 19, 2025) to serve the worshiping ceremony of Ong Cong and Ong Tao and starts to be more active from the 26th of Tet (early start of Tet holiday), the demand for purchasing industrial food items such as cakes, jams, candies, beer, soft drinks... increases. Retail businesses make big profits after Tet holiday season
At supermarkets and shopping malls, the supply of goods is expected to increase by 20-30% compared to normal days. Abundant goods, diverse designs, stable prices and many applied promotional programs have attracted many people, especially in big cities, to come shopping.
In general, the high purchasing power during Tet has helped retail businesses achieve good profit growth. According to information from Saigon Co.op, during the 8 weeks of Tet business, the entire distribution system of Saigon Co.op welcomed more than 100 million visitors to visit and shop with sales reaching nearly 7,000 billion VND. This year's Tet business season recorded growth in the online shopping channel Co.op online, reaching 120% of the set plan.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc - General Director of Saigon Co.op said that this year, the demand for Tet gift baskets for workers and low-income people has increased compared to many years. Therefore, Tet gift baskets distributed by Saigon Co.op to the market through 800 direct sales points and the program Connecting Love - Tet Far and Near on the online shopping channel, have had sales exceeding expectations, reaching 120%. During the 2025 At Ty Tet, Saigon Co.op also organized nearly 200 mobile sales trips to bring price-stabilized goods to serve industrial parks - export processing zones and remote areas.
At MM Mega Market, the Tet sales situation of this system this year is positive. Retail sales exceeded 70 billion VND (only counting the household customers, and not including the revenue 3 days before Tet). In which, the fresh food group exceeded 50% compared to last year.
At traditional markets, although goods are also supplied quite abundantly and diversely, the number of purchases in the days before Tet also increased sharply compared to normal days, but the price of goods did not fluctuate abnormally. In general, the total purchasing power of the whole country during the Lunar New Year 2025 is estimated to increase by about 10% compared to normal months and increase compared to the previous year.
