(CLO) Republicans won more votes in every state in 2024 than they did in 2020.


After most votes in all states were counted, US President-elect Donald Trump won 312 of the 538 electoral votes, including seven battleground states, while Democratic rival Kamala Harris won 226 votes.

Republicans also lead in the popular vote by about 4 million votes, with 95% of ballots counted.

So how do these results compare to 2020, and which states have shifted the most to the right?

The most Republican-leaning states

The Republican Party won the majority of votes in 31 out of 50 states in the US, with the biggest victories being in Wyoming (72.3%), West Virginia (70.1%), North Dakota (67.5%), Idaho (66.8%) and Oklahoma (66.1%).

Meanwhile, Democrats won 19 states as well as the capital Washington DC, where they received 92.4% of the vote, followed by Vermont (64.3%), Maryland (61.5%), Massachusetts (61.2%) and Hawaii (60.6%).

US Election Results: 2020 vs. 2024

In 2020, Joe Biden's Democratic Party won 306 electoral votes in 25 states and Washington DC, while Trump won 232 electoral votes in the remaining 25 states.

In 2024, Trump's Republican Party won 6 more states than in 2020 to win.

All 50 states favor Republicans more in 2024

Republicans have won more votes in every state in 2024 than they did in 2020, with 95% of votes counted nationwide.

In the 2020 election, Mr. Trump received 37.74% of the vote in New York, while Mr. Biden won 60.87%. However, in 2024, Mr. Trump won 44.17% of the vote, compared to Ms. Harris's 55.83%. This was the state where the Republicans had the biggest swing, with their share of the vote increasing by 6.43%, after nearly 97% of the votes were counted.

Other notable changes included New Jersey (up 4.92%), Florida (4.88%), California (4.61%) and Massachusetts (4.38%).
