Go anywhere to commit crime
Duong De Hoang (born in 1992) and Duong De Hau (born in 1996, Hoang's younger brother, from Quang Binh) are two brothers in a family of three. When they were young, their father left, and their mother had to work alone to raise three children, so life was extremely difficult. Lacking their father's love and dropping out of school early, both of them quickly fell into crime.
In 2015, 2017 and 2020, Hoang was consecutively sentenced to a total of 3 years in prison by the People's Court of Le Thuy District (Quang Binh Province) and the People's Court of Da Nang City for "theft of property". In 2015, Hau was also sentenced to 12 months in prison by the People's Court of Ky Anh District (Ha Tinh) for "theft of property".
In mid-2022, Hoang and Hau left their hometown for Xuyen Moc district to find work. Luckily, both were taken in by Mrs. T's family (Binh Chau commune, Xuyen Moc district) and allowed to stay while they worked. Both were also able to get construction jobs with good incomes at a construction site in Ho Tram tourist area. It was thought that after the prison sentences and the help of the people, the two brothers would work hard. But "old habits die hard", both continued their habit of stealing property.
At around 9:00 p.m. on June 8, 2022, Hoang asked Hau to drive him to the NovaWorld Ho Tram construction site to pour concrete. At the gate of the site, Hau went home while Hoang went to the water pump room of two companies that were subcontracting the installation of the pump system and pipelines of the NovaWorld Ho Tram construction site. Discovering that the water pump room was unlocked and unattended, Hoang went in and broke open the cabinet, stealing many machines and equipment worth about 67 million VND.
Next, Hoang called Hau to help transport the stolen property to hide at Mrs. T's house. After that, the two found a source to sell some machinery to people for 2.5 million VND.
Although the stolen goods had not been sold yet, late at night on June 11, 2022, Hoang continued to ask Hau to take him to the Novaland Ho Tram construction site to steal property. Here, Hoang crawled through a hole in the fence into the water pump room of the construction site to look for property to steal. At this time, in the room, Mr. N.D.T (born in 1977, a construction security guard) discovered a strange noise and stood up to shout. Hearing the scream, Hoang panicked and picked up 2 cylindrical metal pipes and threw them at Mr. T but missed. Mr. T bent down to pick up a 20-liter water bottle and was about to throw it back when Hoang picked up a beam and hit him twice in the head, causing Mr. T to lose consciousness and die on the spot. After committing the crime, Hoang escaped and was picked up by Hau to hide the murder weapon.
Life sentence
On April 12, the provincial People's Court opened a first-instance trial for Hoang and Hau on charges of "murder" and "theft of property". During the questioning session, the presiding judge asked the two defendants what they thought when they were taken care of by local people, had jobs to earn money but still went to steal property and then killed someone. Both Hoang and Hau could only bow their heads and could not answer. When the security guard discovered the defendant, why didn't you run away but instead picked up a beam and ran to beat the person to death? - the presiding judge continued to ask. At that time, the defendant panicked and didn't know anything - defendant Hoang stated.
The panel of judges determined that the defendants’ actions were dangerous recidivism, of a hooligan nature, causing irreparable pain and loss to the victim’s family. Therefore, the panel sentenced defendant Duong De Hoang to life in prison for “murder” and 4 years in prison for “theft of property”, with a combined sentence of life in prison. Defendant Duong De Hau was sentenced to 3 years in prison for “theft of property”. In addition, Duong De Hoang must also compensate the victim’s family with 355 million VND in civil liability, including: funeral expenses, mental damage, and support for 1 child and the victim’s parents over 70 years old.
