In 2023, the textbook editorial board of the Education Publishing House sent me a notice that the poem Guitar by Lorca was re-selected to be printed in the 12th grade textbook (2018 General Education Program) for the 2024-2025 school year.
I am happy that the poem was re-selected for the textbook, happy because of the promise of the Vietnam Education Publishing House to pay the copyright of 8 million VND for this poem.
The good news is that the poem is still alive today, exactly 45 years later. I can't believe how fast time flies.
In 1979, I wrote the poem Lorca's Guitar by accident. I wrote it in one go without any corrections, in a small notebook, finished it, read it to a few friends, and then left it there.
I also did not expect that 6 years later, this poem would be published in the poetry collection Rubik's Cube (New Works Publishing House) in 1985.
I thought that was lucky. In 2007, Professor Tran Dinh Su called me and asked me to send him some excerpts from the epic poem Rubik's Cube to be selected for printing in textbooks.
I picked a few passages and found that Lorca's short poem Guitar was easier to include in a textbook than the long poem, especially the not-so-easy-to-read long poem Rubik's Cube .
Unexpectedly, after reading the poem Guitar by Lorca , Professor Tran Dinh Su called me, his voice very happy. He said he would immediately choose this short poem to be included in the 12th grade textbook. Thus, since the 2008-2009 school year, my poem has been included in the 12th grade literature textbook.
In the first few years, this poem was not very well received by teachers and students, because the poem “seemed difficult to understand”. I have explained more than once in the media that the poem is not difficult to understand, teachers should calmly and gently handle it, and it will be fine.
Just a few years later, the poem was well received, from teachers to students. The reception was so warm that it made me, the author, feel… elated. Which poet doesn’t want his poems to be well received by readers?
Up to now, the poem Guitar by Lorca has been in the 12th grade textbook for 15 years. Every time I go online, I read new articles about this poem, mostly praising it, not cursing it. I am really happy, thanking the teachers and students for accepting my little poem.
Looking back, a 45-year-old poem is already very mature. I don’t know how many more years this poem can “live” even though it is my “child”.
