In 2025, the theme of the UPU International Letter Writing Competition will be: “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of and protect you.”

English is: "Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you".

Below is a sample letter for the 54th UPU Letter Writing Competition:

Yesterday, an incident I witnessed kept me awake all night. A group of young people, traveling by car and motorbike, chose the beach for a party. Besides food and drinks, they brought along speakers and sang loudly. The party lasted until late at night. However, when they left, the trash was still there.

A corner of the beach is littered with bottles, jars, plastic bags… This image is not uncommon. Nowadays, marine pollution has become a global problem. This has damaged the health and livelihoods of humans and animals. Therefore, I wanted to write a few lines to share with you.

My dear friend, you are probably already aware of the benefits I offer. Water covers approximately three-quarters of the Earth's surface, encompassing many sources such as rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams, but the largest are the seas and oceans. Seawater provides numerous benefits and plays a vital role in human life.

It provides an endless supply of water vapor to the atmosphere, creating clouds and rain; it helps maintain an ideal habitat for a large number of plant and animal species. I also provide abundant mineral and marine resources for humans, opening up potential for tourism development… However, seawater is currently severely polluted, leading to many unpredictable consequences.

Seawater, and oceans in general, are characterized by containing large amounts of salts, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and organic substances originating from plants and animals. However, when polluted, the natural properties of seawater are compromised by foreign components and change in a negative way, leading to consequences.

This leads to a decline in marine biodiversity; coastal erosion; and economic damage. Seawater pollution puts many marine species at risk of extinction. Furthermore, the marine landscape and ecosystem suffer numerous negative impacts and severe consequences.

It is undeniable that the marine environment is gradually becoming severely polluted due to various reasons, but the majority are still due to human impacts. This stems from indiscriminate littering and the direct discharge of untreated waste into the environment.

Therefore, the first solution to protecting the cleanliness of the marine environment is to actively promote awareness and educate individuals and communities. Taking action to protect us is not too difficult.

People should dispose of waste properly and not litter in rivers, lakes, ponds, or the sea. In addition, there needs to be a waste collection system in coastal areas.

Factories must build wastewater treatment systems that meet standards and implement them in a coordinated manner. It is also extremely important to limit the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources from the sea.

If we don't act now, the ocean will become increasingly polluted. The consequences will not only affect you but will also have a devastating impact on future generations. I have existed and proven my usefulness and importance to humanity for so long, so why don't you protect me—protect your environment?
