Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Early recognition of a stroke and prompt treatment are vital to saving lives.

Although strokes often occur suddenly, in some cases there may be potential warning signs that should not be ignored.

Here are three early signs that occur just days before a stroke, shared by Dr. Eric Berg, a renowned health and fitness expert and Director of the Berg Institute for Health and Fitness, based in Seminole, Florida (USA), according to Express .

Early signs of stroke

It's not always possible to predict a stroke, but some people may have warning signs that need attention.

According to Dr. Eric Berg, there are three early warning signs that he emphasizes are completely different from the symptoms when a stroke begins to occur.

The first sign is a severe headache. Although not all patients experience this symptom, in some cases an unusual headache can be an early sign of an impending stroke.

Dr. Eric Berg noted that because a blood clot forms in the brain, the patient will feel a lot of pressure on this organ, which manifests as a severe headache. Headaches caused by blood clots are also a sign of an aneurysm about to burst, according to Express.

Therefore, any unusual or severe headache should be taken seriously, as it may be a sign of a more serious event.

A 2020 study of 550 people found that 15% of stroke cases had a "premonitory headache" that occurred within a week of the stroke, according to health news site Healthline.

The authors noted that these headaches were severe in nature or different from any previous headaches. Additionally, these headaches began within 7 days before the stroke.

Unusual headaches can be an early sign of an impending stroke.

Severe nausea or vomiting. Another early sign that a stroke may be imminent is severe nausea or vomiting, says Dr. Berg.

Persistent hiccups with chest pain. According to Dr. Berg, persistent hiccups with chest pain can be a warning sign of stroke risk.

Other doctors also note warning signs such as loss or change in vision, sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, feeling confused or having trouble understanding what others are saying, and numbness or weakness on one side of the body.

Seeing a doctor as soon as symptoms begin can help determine the cause so you can get appropriate treatment , according to Healthline .

According to research, up to 80% of stroke cases are preventable if diagnosed and treated promptly.

In the case of acute stroke, emergency treatment within 3 hours of symptom onset will have better treatment outcomes, according to Healthline.
