Information from Children's Hospital 2 (Ho Chi Minh City) on the afternoon of September 15th indicated that NVL (13 months old, residing in Tien Giang province ) was brought to the hospital by his mother because his left testicle was missing from his scrotum. The mother discovered this while bathing her son.
At Children's Hospital 2, the child was diagnosed with undescended left testicle and was scheduled for surgery to move the testicle to its correct position.
According to Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach, deputy director of Children's Hospital 2, undescended testicles is a condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum after birth.
Normally, the testicles move from the abdominal cavity down to the scrotum during fetal development. However, in some children, this process is interrupted, resulting in the testicles being located in an abnormal position, such as the inguinal canal or the abdominal cavity.
During the examination, doctors will check the scrotum to determine if there are testicles. If the testicles are not palpable, the doctor may perform a further examination of the groin area to search for them. In some cases, ultrasound may be used to locate undescended testicles.
According to doctors, undescended testicles are a relatively common condition in children. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial to prevent complications such as infertility, testicular cancer, and testicular torsion.
If you suspect your child has undescended testicles, take them to a specialist for examination and advice.
Treatment options for undescended testicles
According to Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach, in some cases, the testicles may descend into the scrotum on their own within the first few months after birth, especially in the first 6 months. Doctors can monitor the child's condition and reassess it after 6 months, or up to a maximum of 1 year.
Doctors can treat children with hormonal therapy. Specifically, they use the hormone HCG to stimulate the testicles to descend into the scrotum. However, this method is not always effective.
Additionally, surgical descent of the testicle is the primary treatment for undescended testicles. This surgery is usually performed when the child is 6-12 months old. During the procedure, the surgeon will bring the testicle down into the scrotum and fix it in the proper position.
Laparoscopy is indicated when the testicle cannot be found during examination. Laparoscopy can pinpoint the exact location of the testicle in the abdominal cavity and bring it down into the scrotum.
