Xinhua News Agency (THX) reported that speaking at the 6th US-China Business Forum in New York on August 27, Mr. Ta Phong pointed out that the two countries account for more than 1/3 of the global economy and about 1/5 of world trade, so "any separation between the two sides will only make the world poorer".
The Chinese ambassador cited that over the past 45 years, two-way trade has grown more than 200 times, exceeding 600 billion USD annually. In the first 7 months of 2024 alone, this figure increased by 4.1% when calculated in RMB.
Mr. Ta Phong called for expanding cooperation in traditional areas such as economy, trade, and agriculture, while promoting cooperation in new areas such as climate change and artificial intelligence.
According to the Chinese diplomat, the Washington-Beijing relationship is not a zero-sum game: "Our two countries can help each other succeed and develop and prosper together on this vast planet."
Also related to US-China relations, on August 28, in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan discussed the possibility of organizing a new round of contacts between the two countries' heads of state in the near future.
The two officials also agreed to continue implementing important consensuses reached at the meeting of heads of state in San Francisco in November 2023, including maintaining exchanges and communication at all levels, Xinhua reported.
In addition, Mr. Wang Yi and Mr. Sullivan also agreed to arrange a video call between the leaders of the two countries' militaries as well as the second round of the China-US Intergovernmental Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at an appropriate time. The White House statement stated that such exchanges would take place in the "near future".
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, at the meeting, Mr. Wang Yi emphasized that the key to the smooth development of China-US interactions is equal treatment. Meanwhile, the White House issued a statement saying that the two sides had candid, substantive and constructive discussions on a range of bilateral, regional and global issues.
