Not only does Ba Thuoc have extremely rich and diverse natural tourism resources, beautiful and fertile landscapes, but it also has many humanistic tourism resources imbued with the cultural identity of ethnic groups. The whole district has more than 103,000 people, including 3 main ethnic groups: Muong, Thai, Kinh living together, of which the Muong ethnic group accounts for more than 59%; the Thai ethnic group accounts for more than 53%.

Exploiting potential

Ba Thuoc is a mountainous district, about 120km northwest of Thanh Hoa city center, with an important strategic position in terms of socio-economics, defense and security of Thanh Hoa province. National Highway 217, National Highway 15A, Provincial Road 521C, 523B run through the district - important traffic axes connecting Ba Thuoc district with districts, towns, cities in the province and neighboring provinces, creating favorable conditions for exchange, cooperation and socio-economic development. Ba Thuoc has rich natural resources, including places such as Pu Luong Nature Reserve; Son - Ba - Muoi villages of Lung Cao commune; Hieu Waterfall, Co Lung commune; Muon Waterfall (also known as Mo Waterfall) of Dien Quang commune; God Fish Cave of Van Nho commune; Duong Coc Lake of Dien Ha commune; Dan Long Waterfall of Luong Ngoai commune,...

The whole district has more than 103,000 people, including 3 main ethnic groups: Muong, Thai, Kinh living together, of which the Muong ethnic group accounts for more than 59%; the Thai ethnic group accounts for more than 53%. Rich and diverse cultural customs and practices create a colorful picture of cultural and social life. From historical relics, architectural culture, to costumes, cuisine, living customs, beliefs, festivals... all exude unique cultural identities such as: Mai Da Dieu archaeological site; Muong Kho festival; Boat racing festival; Kham Panh poem; epic De da, de nuoc; legend of the stone chu tree, copper chu leaves; brass flowers and tin fruits; traditional stilt houses of the Thai and Muong people; traditional handicraft products. In addition to the above resources, Ba Thuoc is also a place with rich and diverse products, which can completely satisfy visitors from afar through rustic dishes imbued with national cultural identity and the flavor of the mountains and forests such as: hill chicken, rock snails, sour bamboo shoots, bitter bamboo shoots, bitter soup, bamboo rice, wild banana flower salad, Co Lung duck, roasted grass pig, doc fish, corn wine, rice wine...

With its geographical location, natural resources, unique Thai and Muong cultural space, rich in identity, and history of formation and development, it is a very favorable condition for Ba Thuoc to develop community tourism types in the area, including agricultural and rural tourism.

Accordingly, Ba Thuoc district has focused on developing a 1/2000 plan for Son - Ba - Muoi tourist area, Hieu waterfall tourist area, Muon waterfall tourist area; a 1/500 plan for rural residential areas associated with community tourism development in Don village (Thanh Lam commune) and Kho Muong village (Thanh Son commune). In particular, in 2019, Don village (Thanh Lam commune); Kho Muong village, Bang village (Thanh Son commune); Hieu waterfall (Co Lung commune) were recognized by the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province as community ecotourism areas and destinations. Currently, in the district, a number of agricultural and rural experience models have begun to form: experience raising Co Lung ducks; experience planting and caring for Hoi tangerines; experience weaving brocade at Lan Ngoai craft village...

In recent years, Ba Thuoc district has been implementing projects, policies, national target programs... to promote socio-economic development, especially in areas with a large number of ethnic minorities living in the country. Through projects and sub-projects from national target programs such as new rural construction, sustainable poverty reduction, socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas... has contributed to building typical models in various fields, many local specialties have been born from the potential, strengths and attention of the Party, the State, local authorities and the initiative of each citizen.

Forming featured products

In Ba Thuoc district, concentrated specialized production areas have been formed (cassava, hemp, raw sugarcane); greenhouses and net houses for growing safe vegetables and fruits, generating an income of 60 - 100 million VND/1,000m2; concentrated fruit farms (oranges, grapefruits...) in the communes of Luong Noi, Dien Lu, Dien Quang, Ai Thuong with high economic efficiency (180 - 220 million VND/ha); developing indigenous and specialty poultry such as Co Lung duck, ri chicken, hill chicken. Products such as Pu Luong forest honey, Co Lung duck, hoi tangerine tea, Chinese sausage... recognized as OCOP products are the pride of every local resident. By the end of 2023, the district will have 10 products recognized as 3-star OCOP products, of which 5 products are recognized by the Provincial People's Committee (Pu Luong forest honey - Hoang Than Thanh Hoa Joint Stock Company; Hoang family sausage, Hoang family's meat (Ms. Hoang Thi Thanh's business household, Canh Nang town); Quyt hoi tea (Pu Luong Cusine Company Limited); Tuan Anh Co Lung duck - Co Lung duck breeding Company Limited); 5 products are recognized by the District People's Committee (Ram Tam bamboo chopsticks - Dien Trung agricultural service cooperative; Mr. Nhan's honey (Truong Ngoc Nhan's business household); Cu Mac Cai sticky rice - Ban Cong Agricultural - Tourism Cooperative; Muong Khoong brocade scarves - Lan Ngoai brocade weaving cooperative; Dung Tri longan cake - Thiet Ong longan cake cooperative.

In addition, Ba Thuoc also has many potential products associated with the local cultural identity, focusing on building OCOP products such as: super yeast wine, Soi Rung tea, bitter melon tea, papaya flower tea, bamboo shoots; community tourism spots, experiential tourism such as: Hieu village, Co Lung commune, Kho Muong village, Thanh Son commune, Don village, Thanh Lam commune, Lan Ngoai brocade weaving village, Lung Niem commune... Up to now, Ba Thuoc district has 2 traditional craft villages recognized by the Provincial People's Committee: Lan Ngoai brocade weaving village, Lung Niem commune and Tan Thanh village, Thanh Lam commune.

In the period of 2021-2025, agricultural development associated with new rural construction and tourism development are the key programs identified by the 23rd Party Congress of Ba Thuoc district. The total production value in 2023 of Ba Thuoc district is estimated at 3,641 billion VND; the average growth rate of production value in the period of 2021-2023 is estimated at 3.85%. The average income per capita in 2023 is estimated at 30.94 million VND, an increase of 6.98 million VND compared to the beginning of the term. Agricultural, forestry and fishery production is promoted towards improving productivity, quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of products; productivity and output of most crops have increased. The whole district has accumulated 804.9 hectares of land to develop large-scale agriculture, applying high technology. Attention has been paid to preserving the value of historical relics and cultural heritages in the area; The restoration and embellishment work has been invested in and implemented. The movement "All people unite to build a cultural life" has been regularly implemented by the leadership, thereby contributing to improving the cultural and spiritual life of the people. The poverty rate among ethnic minorities has decreased by 5.59% annually.

To effectively exploit potential advantages, especially agricultural, rural, community tourism products, and preserve cultural identity in the area, Ba Thuoc district focuses on a number of solutions such as effectively implementing national target programs; reviewing and including in the planning areas and points with potential advantages for agricultural tourism to have an orientation to build rural infrastructure that meets tourism standards associated with the New Rural Program; perfecting existing agricultural and rural experience models; implementing the construction of a number of models such as: experiencing the cultural space of rice wine; cultural space of brocade weaving; experiencing the production of OCOP products (hoi tangerine tea, wild wolf tea, wild honey, bamboo chopsticks, etc.); experiencing rice cultivation on terraced fields, etc.
