Kamala Harris officially won the Democratic presidential nomination, who could be her "vice president"?

On August 2, the Chairman of the US Democratic National Committee announced that Vice President Kamala Harris had officially received enough votes to become the party's presidential candidate.

According to Reuters news agency, Ms. Harris, 59 years old, was the only candidate in the 5-day online vote (August 1-5) of nearly 4,000 Democratic delegates.

The first woman of color and Asian descent to win a major party's nomination, she will formally be nominated at the Democratic convention in Chicago later this month.

The nomination comes as Ms Harris prepares to hit the campaign trail next week, with a seven-state tour and her still-unknown campaign partner.

Harris will have until August 7 to announce her running mate for the position of US Vice President. Many political observers seem to agree that Harris's "vice president" will most likely be a white man.

Currently, at least five names are mentioned continuously, including four governors: Josh Shapiro (Pennsylvania), Roy Cooper (North Carolina), Andy Beshear (Kentucky) and Tim Walz (Minnesota). However, according to the latest news, the Governor of North Carolina has announced his withdrawal from the race.

On July 21, 2024, US President Joe Biden suddenly announced his withdrawal from the November election and declared his support for Ms. Harris to run for the Democratic Party.

According to La Tribune magazine, Ms. Kamala Harris, entering the major race at the age of 59, is bringing a "breath of fresh air" to American voters who crave a new, younger face to lead the country.

However, Ms. Harris will have to maintain her current advantage in the coming days and convince American voters that she can also represent the world's leading power.

The latest polls show that Ms. Harris has narrowed the gap with Mr. Donald Trump, with her support rate only about 2 percentage points lower (44/46%). Some other polls even show Ms. Harris has surpassed Mr. Trump.

If these figures somehow confirm that the Democratic Party's strategic decision is paying off, it also suggests that the confrontation between presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will be very fierce.
