At exactly 4:15 a.m. on November 7 (Vietnam time), US Vice President Kamala Harris began her first public speech after the 2024 US election was decided. Speaking at Howard University (Washington DC), Ms. Harris admitted that she had lost to Mr. Donald Trump in the race to the White House.

Lose the election and accept the results

"The result of this election is not the result we wanted, not the result we fought for. I know people are going through a lot of different emotions. I understand that. But we have to accept the results of the election. I called President-elect (Donald) Trump earlier and congratulated him on his victory. I also said that we will help him and his team in taking over. We will carry out a peaceful transfer of power. A basic principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the results," she affirmed. The Democratic presidential candidate spent the rest of her speech comforting and encouraging her supporters. She called on voters, especially young people, not to lose hope and to continue fighting for American independence.

Never give up fighting for core ideals

"My allegiance (to the Constitution, my conscience, and God) is why I am here and I tell you that while I concede defeat in this election, I do not concede defeat in the fight that fueled this campaign. That is the fight for freedom, opportunity, equality, and dignity for all of our people. That is the fight for the ideals that are at the core of our country, the ideals that reflect the best of America. That is the fight I will never give up," the vice president declared. Harris concluded her speech: "Only when it is dark can we see the stars. I know that many people feel like we are entering a dark period. But for all of us, I hope that is not true. But if it is, let us fill the sky with the radiant light of a billion stars. The light of optimism, faith, truth, and service."

Mr. Trump recognized Ms. Harris as strong and professional.

Shortly before Harris began speaking, Steven Cheung, Trump's campaign manager, confirmed that the vice president had called to congratulate the president-elect. Cheung said the call was warm and friendly. "President Trump recognized Harris's strength, professionalism and determination throughout the campaign. The two leaders agreed on the importance of uniting the country," Cheung said.
Previously, on November 6 (Vietnam time), major media channels in the US and Mr. Trump himself announced that the Republican candidate would return to the White House and become the 47th US president. Mr. Trump won a resounding victory after winning four out of seven battleground states, namely North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Thereby, he won a total of 277 electoral votes, surpassing the 270-vote mark to win the election. By the early morning of November 7, Mr. Trump continued to win the fifth battleground state, Michigan, bringing his total electoral votes to 292. The situation in the two remaining battleground states, Nevada and Arizona, has been decided, but Mr. Trump is still dominating in these two states.
