Ms. Harris campaigned in North Carolina on November 2.

The Guardian newspaper reported on November 3 that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris unexpectedly surpassed former President Donald Trump in a new survey in the state of Iowa (USA), where he easily won in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

A survey conducted by the Des Moines Register and Mediacom from October 28-31 showed that Ms. Harris was leading Mr. Trump with a 47%-44% support rate in Iowa, which has been leaning towards the Republican Party in recent years.

Despite its 3.4% margin of error, the poll reflects a change in the two candidates' positions after a September poll showed Trump leading by 4 percentage points. The latest poll involved 808 likely voters.

“The poll shows that women, especially those who are older or politically independent, are driving the recent shift toward Ms. Harris,” according to the Des Moines Register .

Mr Trump won Iowa in his last two presidential campaigns, by more than 9 percentage points in 2016 and 8 points in 2020.

An Emerson College Polling/RealClearDefense survey of similar likely voters from Nov. 1-2 had a completely different result, with Trump leading Harris by 10 percentage points. That poll also had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

The poll found that Mr Trump was well ahead of Ms Harris among men and independents, while Ms Harris was far ahead among voters under 30.

Whoever wins Iowa gets six electoral votes. A total of 270 are needed to win the White House. Both parties are focusing their efforts in the final days of the campaign on battleground states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

In another development, Ms. Harris flew to New York on November 2 (local time) to appear on NBC News' Saturday Night Live program.

Harris's campaign declined to comment, but reporters were escorted into the headquarters of NBC, the network that airs the popular show, and two sources said she would attend. The show airs at 11:30 p.m. on November 2 (10:30 a.m. on November 3 in Vietnam).
