Azerbaijan has decided to open an embassy in the capital Kabul, as part of efforts to strengthen ties with the war-torn Central Asian country, the foreign ministry in Afghanistan's interim government said.

The statement read: "The Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Afghanistan, Mr. Ilham Mammadov, paid a courtesy call to the Foreign Minister of the IEA (Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan) Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi to hand over the official note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the opening of their Embassy in Kabul."
In a meeting held a few days ago with the top diplomat of the interim government in Afghanistan, Mr. Mammadov praised the interim government's achievements in ensuring security and stability, fighting drugs and promoting economic development in the country.
Several countries have kept embassies open in Kabul, including Pakistan, Iran, China and Uzbekistan, since Afghanistan's interim government took power after US-led forces withdrew from the country in August 2021.
At that time, many countries announced the temporary closure of their embassies in Afghanistan, in the context of the Taliban declaring victory over the Afghan government.
