General discussion on poverty reduction, agricultural development and food security. |
On October 17, the Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UN) held a general discussion on poverty eradication, agricultural development and food security.
At the discussion session, participating countries expressed concern about the continuing situation of hunger, poverty and inequality, while food security is threatened by major global challenges.
Countries called for finding solutions to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals on poverty reduction, calling on development partners and UN agencies to increase financial support, build capacity and share experiences in agricultural development, create jobs and ensure social security for people.
Speaking on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, affirmed that agriculture is a key economic sector in Southeast Asia, helping to create jobs for about 32% of the population and contributing 22.6% to GDP, making a significant contribution to the common efforts to eradicate hunger, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development in the region.
ASEAN affirms that food production and sustainable agricultural development play an important role in regional and global efforts to restore economic growth, promote green growth and ensure food security. Strengthening agricultural production, improving the efficiency of food systems based on the ASEAN Action Plan on Sustainable Food and enhancing cooperation with international and regional partners in implementing the ASEAN Strategic Plan on Agriculture and Forestry Cooperation 2016-2025 are ASEAN's focuses in this field.
