Polling stations opened at 8am local time (6pm Vietnam time) and are expected to close at 6pm on the same day. Statistics show that 35.8 million voters are eligible to vote in this election. Preliminary results are expected to be announced on the evening of October 23.
This election is considered unpredictable, with voters caught between opposing ideological streams. There are 5 candidates who have passed the primary round and are eligible to compete this time, of which 3 are considered to have the best chance of winning: Minister of Economy Sergio Massa nominated by the ruling center-left coalition Unión por la Patria (Union for the Fatherland); President of the Republican Proposal (PRO – the key party in the ruling center-right coalition from 2015-2019), Ms. Patricia Bullrich; and far-right Congressman Javier Milei.
In the presidential primary election in mid-August, Congressman Javier Milei won the most votes with 30.2%. Minister Massa came in second place, with 21.4% of the votes. Candidate Patricia Bullrich won 17% of the votes. Congressman Javier Milei's lead in the primary election was considered a surprise because observers had previously thought that this was a "two-horse" race between the ruling center-left coalition and the conservative opposition coalition.
According to the Argentine Constitution, to win a presidential election, a candidate must receive at least 45% of the vote, or 40% of the vote with a margin of at least 10% over the runner-up. If no candidate receives the required number of votes, a runoff election between the two candidates with the highest number of votes is held within about 30 days.
The race for Argentina’s top job is more unpredictable than ever, with the candidates having an equal chance of winning. Most political analysts in Argentina believe that no candidate will win outright in the October 22 election, which will require a second round.
