Although there is still a week until the Apple Vision Pro virtual reality glasses officially hit shelves, the "heat" it creates in the Chinese black market is surprising analysts.
On the Xianyu app, a popular online flea market owned by Alibaba, dozens of merchants said they would ship the device from the US to China after it hits shelves on February 2, provided buyers were willing to pay double the official price.
According to information from Apple, Vision Pro virtual reality glasses come in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions with prices of $3,499, $3,699 and $3,899 respectively.
However, on Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Taobao, JD.com and Xianyu, the price of Vision Pro is being pushed up to fluctuate from 4,220 USD to 12,662 USD.
Even on Chinese social networking sites, speculators have raised the price of Vision Pro to an astronomical 100,000 yuan (about more than 14,000 USD).
According to Bloomberg , after its release in the US, Apple plans to introduce Vision Pro to China, the UK, and Canada.
At $3,499, the Vision Pro isn’t for everyone. But analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that Apple sold between 160,000 and 180,000 Vision Pros during the week of pre-orders, far exceeding Kuo’s previous forecast of between 60,000 and 80,000.
Despite a decline in AR/VR headset shipments last year, IDC forecasts nearly 47% growth this year thanks to new product launches like the Vision Pro.
