According to WCCF Tech , last year, the European Union (EU) issued new regulations that forced Apple to open up the iOS platform to third-party developers. Now, Apple's iPadOS is facing a similar prospect as the EU classifies it as a gatekeeper under the DMA.
According to the DMA, a service or application is considered a gatekeeper when it has 45 million or more monthly active users in the EU, an annual turnover of €7.5 billion or more, or a market capitalization of €75 billion or more.
Under the EU’s new tech rules, Apple has six months to meet its iPadOS obligations. This classification is based on a number of factors, including the number of enterprise and end users, as well as the importance of iPadOS for certain use cases like gaming.
The European Commission (EC) said Apple has a strong position in the market for distributing apps and other digital services. Therefore, the EU requires Apple to make changes to promote fair competition in the market.
One potential change is to allow users to download apps outside the App Store on iPadOS. This would give users more choice and could lead to more competitive pricing for apps.
Apple has yet to officially comment on classifying iPadOS as a gatekeeper, but the company may have to make some changes to iPadOS in the coming months to comply with EU regulations.
