Apple has just announced that it will stop supporting iCloud backup on iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 8 and earlier.
According to information from Apple, from December 18, users will no longer be able to back up data from iPhones, iPads and iPods using iOS 8 or earlier to iCloud. At the same time, all existing iCloud backups for these old devices will also be deleted and data cannot be restored from the cloud.
After December 17, 2024, users of iOS 8 devices and earlier will no longer be able to back up to iCloud. |
However, Apple also emphasized that data and applications already stored on the device will not be affected. Users can still use the device normally and have the option to manually back up data to a Mac or PC via iTunes or Finder.
Apple said the decision was made to ensure that the backup system was in line with current minimum software requirements. Since iOS 9, the company has implemented CloudKit technology, which offers better performance and reliability than the old system. Therefore, maintaining the old iCloud backup system is no longer appropriate.
The move also helps Apple optimize its cloud infrastructure and focus resources on improving modern services.
Ending support for devices running iOS 8 and earlier is not just a technical decision. It is also a clear message from Apple to encourage users to upgrade to newer versions of the operating system, which have improved features and security.
List of supported devices in iOS 9: including iPhone (iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone SE 1st generation), iPad (iPad 2, iPad Air 2, iPad 3rd generation, iPad 4th generation, iPad mini, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad Pro 12.9-inch, and iPad Pro 9.7-inch). In addition, the iPod Touch 5th generation and iPod Touch 6th generation models are also supported by this version of the operating system.
