A farmer in Can Tho "got rich" thanks to growing 350 "durian custard apple" trees, a variety that produces large, sweet fruit, priced from 70,000 VND - 90,000 VND/kg.
These days, people in Trung Thanh commune (Co Do district, Can Tho city) are busy harvesting custard apples and selling them to traders. Custard apples are also known as soursop. The reason this custard apple variety is called "custard apple durian" is because it has thorns on the outside, quite similar to durian, is large in size and fragrant.
Owning 350 durian custard apple trees, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Toan, residing in Thanh Loc hamlet, Trung Thanh commune, said that durian custard apples have thin skin and a refreshing taste. In particular, the trees produce "giant" fruits, nearly as long as an adult's hand, weighing several kilograms.
Mr. Toan said that his family has 4,000 square meters of rice land, but the efficiency is not high. By chance, a friend gave him a "strange" custard apple originating from Taiwan (China). What impressed Mr. Toan was that the custard apple was large, beautiful, and delicious...
Learning about this "strange" custard apple variety on the news, Mr. Toan found that "durian custard apple" is grown in the northern provinces and cities.
Mr. Toan bought a durian custard apple tree to plant. After a period of care, the custard apple tree grew well, producing large fruits, weighing from 1 - 3kg/fruit.
From there, he decided to breed “durian custard apple”, converting 4,000m2 of rice fields to grow this tree. Accordingly, Mr. Toan grafted durian custard apple with Siamese custard apple roots, producing 350 durian custard apple trees.
Durian custard apple trees are planted low, in straight rows for easy harvesting. Watering, fertilizing and pesticides are closely monitored. After 2 years from planting, the trees begin to bear fruit, the harvest period lasts about 4 months - 1 harvest/year.
Mr. Toan revealed that the special point in the durian cultivation process is the focus on using organic fertilizers, because this type of tree does not tolerate chemical fertilizers.
When the tree bears fruit for 2 months, to keep the fruit shape beautiful, eye-catching color, and limit pests and microorganisms from attacking and causing harm, Mr. Toan covers the fruit with two layers.
Accordingly, custard apples are wrapped inside in a soft foam mesh bag, and outside in a specialized paper bag for agricultural products - ensuring the quality of the fruit when it reaches consumers.
In addition, after harvesting and packaging for transportation, durian is wrapped in 2 more layers of soft foam mesh bags to avoid damaging the thorny shell.
“Creamers must strictly follow planting and tree care techniques to produce good products. A special feature of the durian custard apple growing process is the use of organic fertilizer before and after the fruiting stage, and the trees also need additional pollination,” said Mr. Toan.
Currently, Mr. Toan's durian garden is harvesting its first crop, with an expected yield of 3 tons/year and could double in the following years.
Traders often come to the garden to buy all the durian custard apples at a price of 70,000 - 90,000 VND/kg. During Tet, the price can reach 150,000 - 200,000 VND/kg. Thanks to growing durian custard apples, Mr. Toan earns about 150 million VND/year.
Mr. Toan is considered the first person in Co Do district to successfully grow and propagate durian.
At the contest "Good farmers applying integrated plant health management (IPHM) in 2024" organized by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City, durian custard apple was selected by the agricultural sector of Co Do district to display and introduce, attracting the attention of experts, agencies and units of the city's agricultural sector.
